1173247 2011-01-28 02:00:00 Hello,

I've just been surfing the net and closed all my windows. I went to check how much bandwidth I've used with Task Manager, and to my horror was downloading data at a horrifying rate. I opened command prompt and ran netstat (en.wikipedia.org) to see what website connections were alive. I found this: 209.236.75.160.static.westdc.net. That was the only entry I didn't recognise, so I unplugged the modem to stop what was happening, then plugged it in again and ran netstat, and it had disappeared! The computer has up-to-date BitDefender running. Anyone got any ideas?

All sorts of applications access the internet over a period on time, checking for updates or freshing data...
Im interested to know how you read how much bandwidth you are using from the task manager....
Why dont you get a free firewall package, that way you can either allow or deny applications as they request access?

1173251 2011-01-28 07:11:00 I trust Windows wasn't doing some background downloading of updates. Paul.Cov (425)
1173252 2011-01-28 22:27:00 To see how much bandwidth you are using with Task Manager (more specifically network traffic, as the modem is connected to the computer via Ethernet) you go onto the Networking tab, click View, then Select Columns. You can then tick Bytes Sent and Bytes Received. This may not be accurate if you use it when more than 1 computer is on the network, however because I think it measures overall network traffic. The ISP is Vodafone, and I did run a Whois search and didn't recognise any of the sites it gave me (albeit 3 out of 14 as I don't have a "Premium" paid account to see the rest.) I'm in the process of writing a piece of software to monitor usage and if it reaches a threshhold it logs all the servers the computer is connected to at the time. As for Windows and other program updates, I am quite sure it wasn't doing any of these at the time. mookster1 (15854)
