1132480 2010-08-28 03:20:00 Righto, its been a while since the last one, lets do it again.

Same as always, Family PC, capable of playing the latest games without costing multiple thousands. A bit of video editing, some photo manipulation,General family usage.

She will be running W7 and no screen, fancy case or peripherals are required, but can be included if you wish to.

I'm going to throw one together using the QMB site to see how close I get to a worthwhile system, keeping in mind I have zero idea of what the current hardware is like in capabilities or value..

1132481 2010-08-28 03:25:00 Only thing I maybe getting is another LCD or LED with freeview. So, I can use it on this, and put this monitor on the other computer. Depending on how much the power rebate is next mth, I may get a BD burner Speedy Gonzales (78)

Makes no difference, The month is listed in the thread title so anyone that reads it can see how out of date it is.

Do you need the whole thing?
Can't use current optical drive? Hard drive? Case?

What I ended up with is:

Intel Core i5 750
Kingston 8GB PC-10600 RAM
ASUS HD5970
CM CSX Case
Existing 250GB HDD
Existing ASUS DVDRW
Existing Corsair 750w PSU

And not all at once either. Did the MB/CPU/RAM in one a while back.
Then the card and case are the 2 most recent alterations.

The card you choose is not bad, medium. But I guess you don't want real high end, so it should be fine.
In fact it's all fine for the price.
Then again - price, why not get a kit? PM to you about that.....

1132487 2010-08-28 05:22:00 Its more an exercise to see what the general views are of current hardware are, I'm not in the market for a new system just yet.

Though next time I do upgrade it will be an entirely new box.

1132488 2010-08-28 10:37:00 CPU; Core i7-980X (about NZ$1650)
Mobo; EVGA X58 SLI LE ($360)
RAM; cheap stuff, 8Gb total DDR3 (roughly $300)
GPU; onboard mobo... for now...
HDD; Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 500GB ($65)
DVD; cheapo DVD-ROM because I hardly ever burn anything, always try to use flash-based media. ($25)
PSU; cheapo again ($30)

All up that's... $2430! But the six cores totally makes it worth it!
