1174061 2011-01-31 06:29:00 G'day .

My very old GFX card failed so I purchased a new "cheapest-card-they-had" (Radeon HD5450) from a dealer to see me through the week (I'm rebuilding soon anyway) . It has both VGA and DVI connectors .

Now the weird thing .

With the PC turned off, I plug in my benQ G2220HD monitor into the DVI port of the card .

AS SOON as I switch the PC on, the monitor goes dead, i . e . , the power indicator light goes dead . If I turn to computer off I am able to turn the monitor on again . I almost want to describe it as the monitor looks like it is "shorting" when the PC is on (that's not what is happening, just how it seems to me) .

I have tested the monitor in my friend's PC - it is fine . And I am able to use an old VGA monitor with the VGA port of the GFX card too .

What could be happening? Just for clarity: the power indicator light on the benQ monitor NEVER normally turns off unless you hit the power switch/unplug the monitor .

Mainboard: Gigabyte EP35-DS3P
PSU is 550W Corsair .

Cheers .

1174062 2011-01-31 10:25:00 it sits there making its plonking on and off noise or something?
Perhaps it isn't seated properly? Broken card? Is it setup correctly in the bios to route the graphics to the PCI-E graphics rather than integrated?
are the DVI ports the right interface? (some have differing bits on them as far as I'm aware)
um...
not sure what else.

It stays off if you let the PC boot?
You installed the drivers?

You got a DVI to VGA adapter you can use?

1174064 2011-01-31 19:50:00 I've got a viewsonic monitor that's doing something similar. It does it when the monitor has been on a while. If I reboot the system, the monitor flicks on & off indefinitely. If I pull the plug out the wall for 20 seconds or so & plug it back in, it's ok until I have to reboot again. Try leaving the monitor unplugged, boot the computer up & then plug it in. I mucked around for quite a while swapping graphics cards etc etc. I know you said it was ok on another pc, but it's worth a try. You may even have a dodgy mains plug connection that breaks down as soon as any load is placed on it Phil B (648)
1174065 2011-01-31 20:27:00 Thanks for replies .

Monitor works fine for extended periods of time on another machine . No it doesn't cycle, just sits there being "dead" (no reponse to on/off button) until the comp is turned off . Doesn't happen with an nVidia card .

I've done some searching and it seems there have been a select few who have had similiar problems when using an older PCI-E 2 . 0 mainboard with the newest PCI-E 2 . 1 Radeons . They're meant to be backwards-compat but are not all . Apparently .

Thanks for help, I'm going to try and return it today, I don't fancy my chances but I'll give it a go because this is the exact card they put in my machine to test, then just charged me service fee + new price of GFX card to keep . If it doesn't work with my mainboard I see no reason not to return - they are the ones who put it in after all!

Cheers

1174066 2011-01-31 20:44:00 If it doesnt work and they've charged you for the job, get a full damn refund. Buy a card yourself and we'll help you get it in. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
