So listening to them (from a record player/tape), was OK - i.e tuneful or catchy, but listening and seeing them live was totally different. Often they were more upbeat, rowdy, and the crowds disrupt and noisy. That sort of atmosphere was more of a influence, could not hear or really appreciate, at times their music, when compared to enjoy simply listening on tape. | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||

Any band that adopted the emo look= not at all interested in what they sound like. Likewise gangster,5luts,transvestites, facepaint, anything that is trying to attract attention because the music isn't doing the talking.....so to speak. |

| 1132464 | 2010-08-28 06:29:00 | Rob - you know I play bass and I say that I do look at the band members - even the gear to see that it doesn't look like a bunch of addicts with some trash gear trying to play music . Up front, let me say that I am pretty shallow and outspoken since I played in days long ago where we wore matching outfits and matching gear and played as a unified group, I am perhaps asking for too much from today's musicians . I think tattoos and ripped/torn clothes make a big difference to me as to what I will listen to or buy for my dollars . Yeah - I'm that prejudiced . When I sometimes get blindsided by a band or performer who's really good and the music has a hook and a melody and something I can hang onto, then I will listen to it . I might not buy it though once I discover that they look like prison escapees; I will usually move away from them and their music . To me appearances are important and it's all part of the overall package as far as I am concerned . I dislike Rush, but love Iron Maiden and Radiohead . Geddy Lee is just gruesome to me - looks like the Witch of the North, sings like a fishermen's friend and although he plays bass and a footboard - well, the talent doesn't work for me in that case either . People like Johny Lang are totally acceptable for music and style/appearances and I even like The Stones, although they all look like dried-apple dolls . Popa Chubby and even Tom Waits are exceptions to my rule . Same with All The Pretty Horses, who has a lifestyle that really sux badly as far as I am concerned, but the bassist is my style and I like his licks . I think appearances are important if that's the audience you want to attract . I don't even like to see damaged corners on the amps or cabs and the 'relic'd' (made to look old and worn by a previous owner - kinda like buying a three-legged horse) or 'Road Worn' bases and guitars make me cringe . But - remember this - I am old-school and I don't really play for money any more either . I'm retired and can be as demanding as I want - and I am . Demanding, that is . If the band doesn't meet my standards, then I pick up my toys and go home . I can afford to walk out - but that may not be your situation at the mo . |

| 1132465 | 2010-08-28 07:25:00 | I think 'Image' used to be a big thing with bands trying to make it. Now, maybe the look isn't as important as quality & professionalism with the music....although there is Lady Ga Ga, Grace Jones, Amy Whinehouse etc now | fnphoto (2434) | ||
| 1132466 | 2010-08-28 08:29:00 | Image should be a close second to quality, unfortunately in today's get rich quick, and don't keep anything just replace it with new society image is next to nothing. Look at the pop charts nothing decent looking in there at all and yet they are making more money than I ever will | gary67 (56) | ||
| 1132467 | 2010-08-28 09:11:00 | Back at school when i'm to listen to a lot of wanna be gangsters pumping out distorted screeching of kesha (ke$ha?) over and over. I used to think eminem was black. back then the only MGMT song played was kids so I assumed that MGMT was some sort of 2001 band. wrong. 3rd form was great for being wrong. now have to listen to eminem and know that he is white and that B.O.B is pitifully wishing that aeroplanes in the night sky are shooting stars. piano in thats ok, nice melody :p |
