1174849 2011-02-03 00:49:00 I have just been looking at the Telecom Wholesale map which shows that VDSL2 will be in my area during February 2011.

I currently have a Linksys AM300 ADSL2.

To get the full benefit of VDSL2 do I need to replace my modem?

1174850 2011-02-03 00:58:00 Yes, you will, but don't rush out and do it just yet.

All that shows is that they've got the equipment in there and will have it turned on by that date, the VDSL2 stuff basically won't be used until Telecom come out with a product offering for it later.

Telecoms VDSL2 offering is likely to be a "premium" service, where they'll do line-checks and things first to make sure you can definitely obtain VDSL2. You're not going to be automatically upgraded to a VDSL2 plan, they will be distinctly separate.

That said, I'm about to be trailing VDSL2 myself shortly so I'd be interested to hear what people recommend. I've got an AM300 also (In Half-bridge), and would like a decent VDSL2 model that can also do likewise, or PPPoA -> PPPoE passthrough.

1174851 2011-02-03 01:23:00 I'd look in to a Netcomm NB11W or ZyXel P870M, otherwise you might want to consider a Cisco 880-series router with a VDSL2 card. inphinity (7274)
1174852 2011-02-03 02:24:00 Do you know if either of those do either half-bridging or PPPoA -> PPPoE Passthrough ? Chilling_Silence (9)

1174854 2011-02-03 04:58:00 The parent company of World Exchange has it I think, saw them advertising (prices inclded ) in the international newspaper a while ago. AFAIK a few areas might be totally active now.

Not cheap, from memory a fraction more and smallish caps.
It was more worth it if you took on more GBs like 20 or more I think.
But I am happyw with ADSL2+ :D

1174855 2011-02-03 05:59:00 There seems to a dispute going on that is delaying the introduction of VDSL2. Read this (computerworld.co.nz) Bobh (5192)

The Netcomm I'm pretty sure does transparent bridging, though we don't have one here anymore for me to check in the UI sorry.

1174857 2011-02-03 09:18:00 OK I'll look into it then, thanks!

I'm just lucky I suppose...

1174858 2011-02-08 08:56:00 Telecom's initial trials mention the Alcatel Cellpipe 7130 router, however their latest documentation only has setup instructions for the Thomson TG789vn.
I went with the TG789vn but wish I didn't, the tech's I spoke to have had all sorts of issues with them, I've had it repeatedly reset to defaults while navigating the web gui.
I couldn't find any retailers or any of the major resellers listing anything but the pricey Cisco 877V so went direct to the distributor of Telecom's routers - ConnectPlay.
They stock both the Cellpipe and Thomson.

Both will do bridging, the VDSL2 service uses PPPoE so in my case the Thomson is set in bridge mode and the authentication/connection is handled by our main router, no half bridge hacks required.
