1174273 2011-02-01 06:40:00 Does running your CPU at 100% results in damaging? I know it creates heat and you could say thermal effect is there

But does it really shorten lifespan greatly.

I been running my cpu at virtually 100% 24x7 for almost a year now. Its predominantly used for encoding/decoding HD video audio and other stuff in between

What processes are using most of the CPU power in the list?

1174275 2011-02-01 07:51:00 I would say your system is quite robust if it is going at 100% for 12 months or so!! It is not quite as bad but a bit like running your car engine at the red line all the time. For this to happen you are either expecting too much from an old machine or an in-adequately spec'ed new machine (not enough RAM, ..) or there is something wrong (rogue program taking up resources). johnd (85)
1174276 2011-02-01 08:17:00 It can reduce the life of the CPU, and potentially other components. inphinity (7274)
1174277 2011-02-01 09:35:00 I have a number of PCs that have been running 100% CPU 24*7 for a number of years, no problem at all. As long as they are kept cool they are fine.
There are heaps of machines around that are involved in research that run flat out all day everyday. It is not necessarily indicative of a problem.

1174278 2011-02-01 09:41:00 Why not use the full capabilities of a CPU?

Heat can cause a problem but other than that your CPU will not die.

Just because a computer is running at 100% doesn't mean it is low on memory. Any capacity of your computer that isn't being used (RAM, CPU cycles) is simply wasted and you may as well not have that capacity if you don't use it.
If anything, it means you are getting maximum return on investment from it.
