1174255 2011-02-01 06:23:00 Hi,

Recently I had cause to doubt my 509T suppied by Telecom,- so they sent me a Thompson v7 and the speed difference is remarkable to say the least
from 500 KB/s on the Link to 13.75 Mb/s on the Thompson--and no external upgrades , ie ADSL 2 is invovled- has not been laid on the street yet
On the Link this forum recommended shutting down at night to let the router reset next time

Telecom has just informed me that it is not necxessary to do this

Any comment from F1 ?---and would it save any worthwhile power?-- 6 diodes light up when online:)

1174256 2011-02-01 06:40:00 I have a Netgear wireless modem/router and it has been on for at least two years 24/7 apart from the occasional reboot. No probs so far.

1174257 2011-02-01 07:13:00 Hi Lakewood lady'

I had a personal call from the senior supervisor from telecom , Auckland ----NOT Manilla ;-)- after correcting a "tripping out" problem was stopped.

and he was quite emphatic that unlike the old Link it was no longer necessary--I wonder how much power I would save if I did :waughh:

I have relocated the router from an the original Link site to a jack point nearer the road,/ line entry, so along with this new speed--who needs ADSL 2 ?
:banana

Thanks

1174258 2011-02-01 07:30:00 Hi, If you are getting a download speed of 13.75m I think you are probably on an ADSL2+ connection; ADSL1 tops out at approx 7.5M, ADSL2 at approx 12M. and ADSL2+ can go 20-24Mb depending on proximity to D-SLAM i.e. line length= attenuation. Leave the router on, some get warm but seem to survive.. it does pay to reset them occasionally as power cuts etc can cause them to re-connect with slower connections. fujitsu (13819)

I am using the Thomson TG585v8 from Telecom. I was told no necessity for switching off the modem/router but good to power off once a while as the "reset" is good at the your end and Telecom's switchboard.

Been using it for 2 months only and reset once. Will continue to do it ocassionlly or only if I remember. The temperature seems OK. My old US Robotics runs even hotter.

Kepping my fingers cross hopefully things will be fine. Happy with the speed. :)

Well. I leave mine on 24/7 because it connects my VOIP service, so if I were to turn it off it would mean my phone wouldn't work. I am about 300 metres from a cabinet, so get ADSL2. Chorus upgraded it last year and my speed has almost doubled since then.

1174261 2011-02-01 07:54:00 No problems in leaving the router on 24/7 - ours is on for VoIP too. johnd (85)
1174262 2011-02-01 08:49:00 If your worried about overheating, I have found three or four 10cm high rubber grommets underneath seem to increase the heat dissipation. (touch test only!) Just make sure to keep the grommets away from the hot spots. PPp (9511)
1174263 2011-02-01 09:06:00 I have a WAG160N router that a lot of people on here squeal about. I haven't had any real problems with it. Only once have I had to do a master reset on it, about 18 months ago I think. Not sure what the reason was. It's on about 16hrs a day, I used to leave it on 24/7 before the reset, but now pull the plug at night & ever since it's not missed a beat Phil B (648)
1174264 2011-02-01 09:55:00 My router is on all the time, but over time it tends to slow down, so I reset it and it bounces back again. This occurs after a couple of weeks. mzee (3324)
