1174995 2011-02-08 03:34:00 Sounds like it could be indexing to be honest, but the thing that makes me unsure is that it was weeks after it was all up and running and everything installed that it happened.
I do find the search bar handy on the odd occasion but more so as a shortcut then because I don't know whats on my PC, as it can be helpful for getting docs that are neatly organised under 10 different folders.

1174996 2011-02-08 04:42:00 Most of the time indexing will only slow a PC for a short while (an hour or so depending on the amount of data). Not weeks, unless you are consistently changing data.

Only way to tell is disable it. If it is indexing it will have an instant effect.

But who exactly uses the search option??

Personally I use the search functions daily - considering its indexed 4-5 different computers over the LAN there can be items of interest on any PC/Server. I also know many people that use it on daily basis, the search function is not just to locate files or folders.

Use the software in stalled in W7:
Easiest way to see whats causing the Lag, when it lags, open task manager -- under the performance tab look to see whats using the power - if you want more in depth, bottom of Performance Tab, - Resource Monitor - there are several options to look at, it will show on the right graphs - look at whats using resources.

1174997 2011-02-08 06:52:00 I've had a look through of the Win tools and there doesn't seem to be anything useful, I've looked at probably all the important ones, System health generator, resources and performance monitor, event log and task manager, and the resource monitor doesn't show how apps use the data only the combined data used by all apps. 1174998 2011-02-08 07:53:00 Have a look at This site (maketecheasier.com) - downlaod and run process Monitor when the PC is lagging, follow the instruction on that site and it will tell you exactly whats putting on the brakes.

To test if its indexing ( which I somewhat doubt) disable it - if it is the indexing there will be an instant response.

The correct way to do it - Open the control panel, programs and features, on the left, Turn Windows features on or off - Windows Search - Untick.
