1174203 2011-02-02 03:06:00 is windows fully updated ? although all the suggestions here should work I was of the understanding (perhaps wrongly) that microsoft had finally added a suitable codec to media player somewhere along the way. Certainly I no longer install codecs and my media player handles DVD's ok - although VLC is just better (I particularly like the way it auto skips the warnings etc and goes straight to the menu)

Edit: If you have any free versions of DVD software floating around such as often come with graphics cards such as powerDVD or winDVD that'll work too

1174206 2011-02-02 21:11:00 Yeah I know it never did, but on recent installs with SP3 and the latest media player is this still the case ? I only ever install VLC now and no codecs at all and DVD's seem to play fine in media player.

Or maybe not, as I type this I realise I always install AutoGK and a few other encoding tools and that could be the source of a few codecs.

TBH though playing DVD's on the PC is not a common practice for me. In the past I would always install Power DVD and that comes with the required codec to enable media player to work if you prefer it.
