1176257 2011-02-08 05:19:00 Can't find what I want with the search function so I'll ask...

Recently replaced a keyboard - the old one succumbed to repeated ..errrmmm..."percussive maintenance" shall we say...:annoyed:

So I bought a new one without thinking too much about it. A Microsoft "Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1. 1". It was not expensive. ($45) Which is why I bought it.

Don't like it much. Should have thought longer and researched more.

Why no like?

1. No caps lock indicator - you can only tell if caps are locked by typing something.

2. No number lock indicator either.

3. No "My Computer" hotkey.

4. It initially interfered with Firefox settings but have that fixed now - how surprising I thought...

5. All black. I use it in a lowish light situation and it is less visible to my aging eyes than a lighter coloured one.

6. Stuff I don't need - like the multimedia keys...useless to me.

Some things I do like about it:

1. Nice key action

2. Quiet - can't stand clackety-clack keyboards - drive me crazy!

3. Quite like the lack of wires - happy with the wireless link.

What do I use it for?

Mostly business stuff and a lot of online forum stuff. The usual yadda I suppose.

I do play games on it when business is slow (most of the time these days :sleep) but don't really think I need a gaming keyboard. I seem to cope with what I play.

So! Given the above, what would you recommend? 'cause I think I'll replace this one and maybe relegate it to the home puter.

Thanks. :thanks

1176258 2011-02-08 06:28:00 I use a Logitech K800 Illuminated wireless keyboard and love it to bits. Like you, my eyesight is no longer what it was but illuminated characters on the keys are a boon in low light and it's a very nice keyboard to use. Not cheap, though. Around $180 from Ascent. 1176259 2011-02-08 06:38:00 1 & 2) I bet the caps lock & num lock indicator are both on the wireless receiver, next to the scroll lock indicator.

3) Windows + E, or you can change what one of the other hotkeys does

Not that I'm saying you should use a keyboard you don't like, just, some of your points are not exactly correct ;)

Personally, I <3 Logitech.

K350?

Getting a boring beige keyboard could be a challenge, unless you just get a $10 special somewhere.

1176260 2011-02-08 07:48:00 I too dislike Black keyboards as black letter on beige is a lot easier to read and they don't show the dust the same way. mikebartnz (21)
1176261 2011-02-08 23:00:00 Thanks for your informative replies all.

Inphinity, you are dead right on all counts. Didn't think to look at the receiver...:drool And yes the windows/E works - thanks for that.

I like the sound of illuminated keys - might have to look again. Mind you, IRD wants ten million of my dollars in GST this month so I might have to wait...:groan:

1176262 2011-02-08 23:18:00 Yes I dislike black keyboards and find it easier to see black lettering on a lighter colour. Unfortunately when shopping around for a new keyboard I found that you could have any colour you want as long as it is black.

I bought myself a horrible black keyboard and installed a lamp that shines down on the keyboard. An illuminated keyboard sounds like a good idea.

1176263 2011-02-08 23:36:00 One of the nice things about the K800 is that you can set it to only illuminate when your hands come near it to type (saves battery use between charges) and you can vary the degree of illumination or set it to adjust according to the ambient light in the room.

Number and caps lock indicators are on the keys themselves and it provides a useful assortment of FN hot keys.

Charges from USB so no problem waiting for batteries to charge

And no, I don't work for Logitech but I wish I did! I'm getting to like their stuff if only it was a bit less expensive:p

1176264 2011-02-09 01:21:00 Go into a shop and look at them. Press keys. That will tell you how "soft" it is. pctek (84)
