1134776 2010-09-05 11:15:00 The trouble you have is that just about any spray you use will damage the whole plant, your side and your neighbors as well. So unless you get his agreement to eliminate it altogether you could get into trouble legally.
If you get his agreement I think either Dicamba, Escort or a spray called Woody Wood Killer would do the job. To make it work much better use a silicon wetting agent to assist absorption. These sprays work slowly working their way through the whole plant, even so Ivy is very tough and may need a second spray in a couple of months. Now is a good time to do it as Spring growth will make it easier to assist the spread of spray through the plant.
Sprays are NOT cheap and most do not come in small "consumer" size containers especially the more powerful ones although you may be able to find Woody Wood Killer in smaller containers. Follow all instructions that come with the sprays to the letter, on a calm day, using a proper mask and protective gear, these sprays deserve respect, take care not to spray other plants.
Failing to get your neighbors consent, chop off all the connecting stems where they come into your property and let the ivy die off for a while, when it has turned brown, as previously mentioned use a flat spade to remove as much as you can. From then on it is a "trimming" war. Not ideal ,so try to be very nice to your neighbor! If in doubt get a professional in.

1134777 2010-09-05 14:51:00 Are youse guys allowed to purchase 'weed oil'?

We have it here, although clandestinely, and it works very well . ORTHO makes it and if you get a whiff of it, you'll recognize the smell instantly as it was internationally used all over the place to control weeds by smothering their stoma under the leaves and they'd cease respiration .

Then if not, what about copper sulfate? That is a systemic root/stalk killer that will wipe out the whole plant too .

We use copper sulfate to kill roots in our sewer lines here in the states and it comes in several 'wonder-cure' packages that are, quite frankly just over-hyped products that contain a small amount of the active ingredient with some nice colored borax or whatever else to make it bulky .

Maybe you can get some from a compounding pharmacy (apothecary?) in bulk form . All you have to do to buy it here is to sign a document that you aren't going to make a bomb out of it . Can one do so? - I dunnow .

1134778 2010-09-05 21:24:00 If you and the neighbour want to kill the whole lot, use Tordon, if you can still get it. Check with Wrighties or someone in the farming business. You will probably not get it from a garden supply store. Richard (739)
1134779 2010-09-05 21:33:00 Get a steam cleaner and steam it to death. You could also try Paraquat. (en.wikipedia.org)

1134780 2010-09-05 21:55:00 I've tried Glysophate or Roundup sprayed heavily onto the leaves, under direct sunlight, but almost it had no effect on the leaves at all.

Do you think using a paint brush directly paint undiluted Glysophate onto it will do some damage?

PCTEK's $50 for 50ml stuff is too expensive :dogeye:
Tordon BK (for spraying at a rate of 60ml per 10 litre with 10 ml of penetrant);

Thats what it was.
You don't use the whole bottle - yes it was expensive but I battled ivy for ages before I gave up and bought this stuff.

It might be cheaper elsewhere, I only had Wyndhams PGG to buy it from at the time.
Might have been 100ml too, only remember it was smaller than your roundup bottles...........bit smaller than a cream bottle.

Roundup etc is a waste of time. You need to do what I said and how I said too - cut it first...

In this case, can I ask the neighbors to do something about it? It is after all their plant growing out of control and coming onto my property?

This is really sucks, they can plant something that can crawl onto other people's property, yet we've to be very careful not to damage the plant . . .

Thanks Richard - I rang Farmlands - the smallest quantity is 1 L and it costs $130 :crying
A friend of mine is a farmer so I will see if he has a small quantity that I could use.

:)

Steam is a good idea. I will check our local hire shops.
Paraquat is nasty stuff. Farmland says it is not used anymore due to its toxicity.

Surfer Joe - what exactly is the "weed oil"? Brand name? Chemical make up?
