Dear KANDJC:

Sometimes good friends just want to talk about things and even though we know that Google is always there - we sometimes just like to have a little input on things that we accomplish in our lives.

Kinda like sitting in a virtual pub, ya know, just tossing back a few beers, ya know, and small-talking - ya know?

That might sound like a waste of time and electrons to you - and I can see that you've withheld scolding or insulting persons whom you may think addled - but we have been in communication with each other for a few years now.

Besides: Virtual beers and bars don't give you hangovers.

We, however (if it's OK with you) shall go our own errant and silly way and just have this conversation as usual. You are, of course welcome to offer some input and even some ideas of your own.

Again, thank-you for the concern and - Oh yeah, the next round's on you. And I shall take your advice under advisement, fer sure.

Hi SJ,

I use to research and test coatings (pre-coats, primers, top coats, prints, etc) for Carter Holt (and International Paper from USA), and used to test/converse with a well known coating/print company from Ohio called Michelman's (http://www . michelman . com/) systems . I think their in Cincinatti (That's what it is I think) . Maybe check their site and suppliers if useful .

SJ

Are you talking about decals for models?

Water slides or self adhesive?

Modge Podge works a treat . :)

I want to make my own logo for the head of a bass guitar I an building and thought a water-slide would be nice .

I don't want to go whole gun with silk screen and such for a 1- or 2-off design, but figgered that making them on my printer with whatever special paper I would need would prove to be viable .

There is a product by 3M that I used as a fixative for charcoal/pastels and pencil drawing years ago in art classes and perhaps that's what I'm trying to remember if it's any good for this application or not .

I was thinking it might be something like this:

1134844 2010-09-06 04:00:00 some computer-cut vinyls can be glossed over ok. Fixative won't be any use for you. SoniKalien (792)

I just wonder if vinyl types would be OK or not - I tend to think not.

I will need shading and blending of colors to achieve what I envision anyway. The color borders in vinyl are too clear-cut and abrupt for subtle shading I feel.

Then there's the thickness problem with vinyl too, as I cannot have any actual thickness much more than the ink I feel to make the decal sit under several coats of clear urethane, to resemble the factory finish over the decal that would normally be there.

Let me see if I can find an example for you of what I need to accomplish - but with my own art work and logo, of course.

This sort of (non) response really p8sses me off
so kandjc....
Why not just close the forum, as in reality most info can be found after spending 4 hours trawling through google hits.
Its a discussion forum m8te :annoyed:

Sorry for going off topic.

1134847 2010-09-06 06:54:00 Maybe get some ideas from this ebay seller (cgi.ebay.co.uk), which mentions better to use thermal printers for durability amongst other things. kahawai chaser (3545)
1134848 2010-09-06 09:47:00 Many years ago for model aircraft decals we used to just use clear over any water-based gummed paper, then paint carefully on the clear, another coat of clear over the artwork, cut it out, soak the paper in water and slide your decal carefully into place.
Wallpaper was good for larger decals base stock.
I imagine if you lacquered a bit of wallpaper on the sticky side you could then run it through an inkjet to get your artwork on, then clear lacquer, cut, wet, slide, drink beer. Should be a trivial enough thing to try, maybe you could test a Vegemite slogan for your car ;)

I think durability isn't so much of a problem as the decal will have a very think coating of clear urethane over it to make it back to the original thickness of the OE surface . I'm just wondering about the problem of crazing the clear coat that I need to print the waterslide on first .

That sounds like a winner! Can the beer come in between any of the processes or would that mess up the final product?

Ya think Vegemite would give me a sponsorship if I plaster their logos all over my K5 Blazer?

1134851 2010-09-07 00:33:00 maybe screenprinting would be a better option? It won't be cheap but it will give you the results you're after. SoniKalien (792)
