2010-09-05 04:44:00 | [Any idea how to get rid of the ones on my side? Apart from doing it manually by hand?] To answer the original question. You will have to cut every stem that comes from the neighbours side of the fence. The closer to his side the better! I had it on a fence at home. I then used a spade to chisel/scrape the suckers of the wall. Had to paint the wall later, but problem solved. Ifyou used a poison on the stem, it would have to be applied as soon as you cut the stem, because the stem secretes a skin which seals of the end. Got to be done manually. lol.

2010-09-05 05:22:00 | Ah Ivy. I forget the nema of the stuff - I had to go to PGGs and get them to look it up - it was $50 for a small 50ml bottle. You cut the thing down first, leaving stalks, then apply the stuff liberally to the cut ends. Eventually most of it dies but unless you can go over his side too and do all the bits over there, baby shoots will continue to reappear forever, pull them out when they're tiny and it keeps it under control. Nothing else works, I know - I tried everything including burning it.

2010-09-05 06:06:00 | Thanks for all the input and replies. Most appreciated. Darn .. seems this crap Ivy is really hard to deal with. I've tried Glysophate or Roundup sprayed heavily onto the leaves, under direct sunlight, but almost it had no effect on the leaves at all. Do you think using a paint brush directly paint undiluted Glysophate onto it will do some damage? PCTEK's $50 for 50ml stuff is too expensive :dogeye:

2010-09-05 06:11:00 | Glysophate undiluted on to cut ends within two hours of cutting but as said it will still take time. | Snorkbox (15764) | |
2010-09-05 09:53:00 | The problem with spraying it is that the leaves are shiny and don't absorb. We managed to kill it with Escort (quite a powerful farm herbicide) after trampling it. Damaging the leaves (as we did by standing all over it) lets the spray get in. The stuff we had trampled died MUCH quicker than the stuff we hadn't. Given it's on a fence, trampling obviously isn't an option, but you could slash at it with something possibly. It will take a few months to die off though, and possibly more than one application. Roundup (Glyphosate), despite the many places it is suggested, will not work. Depending on how widespread it is, you may be able to get rid of it by first cutting it off from the ground and letting the stuff on the fence die, then carefully pulling out every trace of it from the ground and burning it. Any piece left in contact with soil will grow again, so it may take some time to get rid of it all.

2010-09-05 10:44:00 | Ivy is a ***** to get rid of. Pull/cut as much as you can, but if the neighbour won't do anything it's only a stopgap measure. If they agree to help get rid of it, dig through the soil and pull out the roots. Or, if you can, drilling small holes into the base and putting bleach/strong weedkiller in may do something. Also, dead vines will happily hang on to the fence for years.
