1176209 2011-02-08 00:20:00 I am looking for a UPS unit to plug my modem and router in the office at home into.
Can someone recommend me a good model to get?
I am leaning towards APC from what people have been saying.

1176210 2011-02-08 00:31:00 Just been changing all our UPS's when they crap out ( 5 years use aint to bad)

We currently have 3 of the APC ES 550 This one (www.notebookcity.co.nz) - only linked that site as its got a reasonable Picture.

1176211 2011-02-08 00:35:00 For just a modem & router, I'd go with something small & simple like APC BackUPS CS350VA which you can probably find for $130ish retail. inphinity (7274)

You might be right inphinity might get smaller one for the modem and router but It will need to have the 3 pin wall point on it.

1176213 2011-02-08 01:09:00 How long do they last ?

How long is a piece of string :)

Depends on what sort of a hiding they get. If they are always getting power surges, spikes, brownouts, then they wont last as long as one that only gets triggered every so often.

Our original ones - Libert, have lasted us around 5 years. Had 3 out of the 5 Liberts we have, fail last year over a 4-5 month period. The other two we have still work fine.

Changed the failed Liberts to APC 550, and they are running sweet as.
Few days ago we had the lights flicker and power drop here - they all went off within seconds of one another - damn racket :D But at least they worked - the computers kept going, and so did the TV (its running through one as well as the media center)

The 550 I have under my desk, runs: The PC, Monitor, Router, Cable Modem,5 Port Switch, Phone charger.

Slight hijack.
I don't know much about UPS, never considered getting one but if I am looking at that picture right you plug 8 devices into this and then plug this into the wall so effectively you have a 8 way powerboard but a lot safer.

Would that be right?

1176216 2011-02-08 02:15:00 Too Answer two questions at once:

The "racket" = the sound of the UPS alarm going off, indicating its running on battery. The liberts are quiter loud, while the APC are quieter - If you can imagine the Beeping sound of a truck backing -- Now x that by every UPS going at the same time :waughh:

What a UPS is , basically, 4 of the power points have surge protection and battery backup, so in the event of any power problems , the battery kicks in, and keeps the PC running till the power comes right. Its not designed to keep it going for ever, generally enough time to safely close off any work and close the PC down normally in the event of a long outage.
The other 4 power points are only surge protections.

1176217 2011-02-08 02:19:00 The one you suggested sounds really good. nedkelly (9059)
1176218 2011-02-08 02:19:00 Well I was thinking of putting in another couple of wall outlets.
This might make it unnecesary, cost about the same and be transferable.
