1175498 2011-02-06 02:04:00 I have an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running Win XP.
A couple of times now I have gotten a "Blue Screen" while on the net, after it has rebooted itself I have found the modem does not work.
After removing the modem from the device manager, rebooting and reinstalling the the modem driver I can get it going again.

Anyone have an idea why this is happening?

I suspect that the modem is on its way out.

Jeff.

1175499 2011-02-06 02:35:00 Sounds like the modem or its driver are stuffed Speedy Gonzales (78)
1175500 2011-02-06 04:16:00 Could be the networking module in the laptop? PPp (9511)
1175501 2011-02-06 04:18:00 Try the modem with another computer and see if you get BSOD PPp (9511)
1175502 2011-02-06 07:47:00 Can't try modem in another PC as it is build in on this model.
The driver as far as I can tell is fine.

It has been approx. 2 months between each time it has happened.

Maybe it is a sign I should get broadband.

1175504 2011-02-06 20:39:00 IMO download the latest driver or maybe even reinstall the OS, if it does not work out of the box, it won't work.

I had it once but I didn't test it before I sold it so the dude took it to a laptop shop for inspection and knocked off $200-300 off the price of a "used" laptop  cos if you buy the modem new at shops, it is not cheap but auction sites might be flooded with them. It's a internal card under the keyboard or maybe under a plastic flap at the bottom of the laptop.

Make sure you know what part it is, sometime it's a modem itself, other times it's a combo with network, in my case the network remained functional but the mdoem stuffed up. You may want to do a search underneath your laptop model etc .. cos if the modem number is slightly off you may struggle to get drivers, with the correct one you can get drivers off your laptop website. Like I had a Thinkpad, well the newer one - not the one they knocked the price off, there is a model number, I had the same number without the B at the end, I struggled to find drivers then found one site off UK, might of been Mitec or something like that.
