1457372 2019-01-17 08:44:00 all this to get me through til the 4th Feb by which time I will have my NEW rig running using DDR4 RAM (Which is now old) I am buying an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G APU next tuesday and two weeks later I will be buying 8GB or 16GB of DDR4 2666 RAM or 3200....there is some question about what speed RAM I will be getting because some Tech guides I watch the videos on say completely different things...one in particular says that APU needs Fast Ram and Lots of it but you don't have to buy expensive 3200MHz, you can use 2400 because the benchmarks and increase in computer graphics is minimal and will only gain 1FPS in gaming. I am considering getting the G.SKILL 16GB (2x8GB) F4-2933C16D-16GFX FLARE 2933 CL16 for $360.00....or the CORSAIR CMW16GX4M2Z2933C16 VENGEANCE RGB PRO 16GB (2X8GB) DDR4-2933 CL16 for $270.00. (I don't need/want RGB)..........besides, the Ryzen 5 2400G doesn't run up to 3200MHz RAM so why should I buy it to 'Speed up' data transfer?
The MB I have to use with the above HW is Gigabyte AB350M-D3H and that will accept DDR4 3200MHz, but the Ryzen 5 2400G is 2933MHz.
:D but that is a month away before that is up and running and then It will have to be a Fresh Instal W10 etc etc etc.

yeah I know they are old...depends what one considers to be OLD.

anything from WinXP era I'd consider old.
I have 2 PC's at home with the same chipset (both XP). Both are OOOOLLLLLDDDDDD . :punk

Too old for Win10 .
As I said, you may run into issues with chipset drivers for Win10 drivers . If its only temporary , maybee install Win7 instead .
Is it worth all the setup hassles with such an old motherboard ?

good luck, you'll need it :)
Also, check for blown & bulging caps when you get the board .

yep W7 Pro SP1 32 or 64 bit will do fine as a stopgap for the month. Yeah its worth the hassle and I have had enough of them of late. It will suffice and get me a decent Internet speed. When I get the final 2 parts for my AMD Ryzen 5 2400G rig in the next 3 weeks the 'oldie' can sit on the sideline 'til I find it a home with someone.
Thanks

1457375 2019-01-21 03:29:00 Hi to all
I received the new (old HW) today and am pleased to say that it is running like a Champion. I am using the CoolerMaster RS-550-PCAR-E3 550W PSU to power the Asus M268-AM Plus Mobo, AMD Athlon II x4 635 2.9GHz CPU, 4GB 92x2GB Kingston PC2-6400, DDR2 and an EVGA Ge Force GT710 1GB DDR3 Graphics Card....and the HDD on which I had my W10 Pro x64 v1809 was booted into without batting an eyelid so that is a real bonus...... but it needs Activation. So I go look into that and maybe have to phone MS

1457376 2019-01-21 04:26:00 If it was an online login run the troubleshooter and pick the old pc name from the list as this pc, might accept it and activate without ringing microsoft. dugimodo (138)

dugimodo...thanks...I got it done after all sorts of bother using the troubleshooter and clicking that I have changed hardware and had to go to my MS Account which was real hard work because I didn't remember what my account was in... in the end it said it can't find me or the computer...something along those lines. Anyway after I got it activated and had to reboot it installed updates and when came back to log in screen it had changed from my sign in name to my full email sign in name which was one of the things I had to enter when getting into the MS Account.... and also my damn Comodo IS had completely been obliterated and was nowhere to be seen. I have just installed it again. Strange happenings. The W10 Pro x64 v1809 I am using I downloaded using the W10 1809 download tool and it was activated before I did the HW Change. Anyway its all systems go now. In the next 4 weeks I will have my Ryzen Rig on the go.... but if I decide to get the 2600X or the 2600 well I just gonna have to get a GPU Card and thats another $300-500 so it'll be another month in the making. :D
It is just so nice to have fast Internet and a responsive computer again.... and now I can be watching Ronnie O'Sullivan Snooker games that are fluent video quality. :punk
cheers

1457379 2019-01-21 10:10:00 You can always run a cheap graphics card in the mean time, My backup card is a GT610 that cost me $20 off trademe. I use it for testing and to give me an HDMI port on machines that don't have it.
It's no good for games but it does everything else just fine and is new enough to have drivers in any OS I've tried.

yeah good idea, I will have a look for a decent cheap graphics card on trade me to fill the gap. I think this setup I have at the moment will play any games I have. My last rig did and that was running the Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz CPU but it did have 8GB DDR3 1866MHz RAM I will install a couple of games today and see how they run..in fact I will install Sniper Elite 3 for a start as my tester. My other favourite game is Diablo II Lord of Destruction :D old as the hills but is a bit of fun.
cheers

Hi,,,This looks good for the price...and reviews say its still a good value card in 2017 which is only one year and a few weeks ago. I will be watching it closely www.trademe.co.nz
There are a few others as well. A buy now would be the ticket :banana
