| 1457344 | 2019-01-17 18:57:00 | [QUOTE=SurferJoe46;1285232] an .ISO file has to be extracted to a folder and then you use that to burn a CD or DVD a bit vague and as far as I know ya can't boot into an Op Sys that is an .ISO image. It, the .ISO has to be extracted to a Folder or burned to a blank CD/DVD and installed to a Hard drive as a Bootable Operating System WRONG in every statement above. You DONT extract the contents of an ISO. A ISO is compressed version of what ever it was created from, its designed to be in .ISO Format. When you get a ISO if you want to put it on media you either burn it with ISO software to either a CD or DVD, or if you use a USB use something like rufus. The programs are designed to burn the ISO correctly from the software. As proof, have a watch of this, its a Mint 19.1 in ISO, shows installing mint on a Virtual Machine, RUNNING from the ISO. If I wanted to install it on the VM I would click install Mint, this is all running from the Live ISO. :) You CAN boot from a ISO, they are designed for it. streamable.com wainuitec hi. I have extracted ISO to folder to instal Windows to a HDD that is not the C Drive of my computer. I have also Mounted the OS .ISO, clicked it open and installed Windows OS from that to a HDD that is not the C Drive, or whatever program the .ISO contains and have installed that to C Drive or wherever. I know what an .ISO file is. When I get .ISO files I burn them to DVD using ImageBurn..which in its way is 'extracting' the .ISO and putting it on the DVD in the same way as what one would see if they purchased a Windows OS DVD or any other program that is downloaded as a .ISO. I have never Booted into a working Windows OS from an ISO. But I have Run Ubuntu from ISO LIVE ISO or Live CD. Far as I know, Windows can't be installed to a USB drive and carried about and plugged into any computer and booted up as a working system, though I did see an ad or suchlike about a new device USB stick that contained the Computer Windows OS and was used to boot into when OS on computer failed. |

| 1457345 | 2019-01-17 19:32:00 | For the record . . . . . I was wanting to put an Ubuntu distro-slash-flavor on a bootable SD card . . . . . . which I have accomplished via TRANSMISSION somehow . It went right on and I succeeded in getting it to boot as an SD HDD and installed it many times faster than an optical disc version on another Rescue Tower . . . which I will give away to a very old guy . I find old desktops with a vintage Windows opsys on them, burn it all down and install a Linux something-or-other distro on it . I try to give the intended person a copy of the distro on an SD Card for if . . . . . or WHEN . . . . . they screw it up . It recognized the legacy hardware and the sound card and Wifi is working too . I've also gotten my RTL1822AU driver in and it's running after a reboot . Don't forget that one MUST REBOOT to get the WiFi USB dongle to start working . I use my ALFA unit . . . . which every Linux distro likes and recoganizes instantly . . . to dnld the RTL drivers, then I switch them out . I am on wifi with that distro and all is well . . . . although at the moment I am running my tablet in the hospital lab, on their free server, getting a blood test, and not on that 'puter . . . . . which is at home . . . . where I am not right now . I'll try to deliver that system on Saturday afternoon . Thanks all . . . . . . . now ive got to find out why my spellclunker turns itsel ON and OFF at will . Any ideax? |

There certainly is, its called "Windows to Go". Not all versions of Windows has it. The two biggest draw backs with Windows to Go , is a LOT of USB drives don't support it, them there's the computer its self you are trying to run it from, if its a low spec PC trying to run from the USB drive is painful to say the least :sleep As per the warning: 9300 Extracting the ISO's the way you described, not a good idea, some don't work if you do that. Seen it many times people try that and fails, burn them as meant and they work fine. |

Seems to me from what I read about Windows to Go is that it is for Enterprises and has to be installed to a Certified WTG USB Drive. Fine. For Businesses and Enterprises. But what I was saying about Windows installed to a USB Drive (that is not Certified WTG Drive) is that I couldn't instal Windows 10 to a USB Drive and cart it to my mates place and connect it to his PC and boot into it because from what I have read, Windows 8/8.1 and W10 in particular OS's have been made to run on one computer if the owner has 1 License key to use and embedded into that HDD/USB Drive is the Processors Unique ID and the Motherboard so it will only run on that computer that has that specific Motherboard and Processor. If that is not the case then it means that the replacement Motherboard and CPU that I am getting should open the W10x64 v1809 that I have installed to a HDD from the computer I had in which the MB and CPU are dead. MS License is 1 License for 1 computer. You know all that and I can't be telling you anything you don't know. But I can do it this way www.backup-utility.com This isn't my Thread anyway so I shouldn't be hijacking it to discuss my computer remake. Extracting .ISO's to a folder and installing Program or Op System from that folder is not a practice I do all the time. I only have done it if I didn't have a blank Dual Layer DVD or a 700MB CD or a Flash Drive with enough usable space onto which to burn the .ISO and I wanted to get the app/Program installed and running. |

| 1457349 | 2019-01-18 17:45:00 | Oh and by the by, the reason I had asked SurferJoe64 what Op System he had used to download the ubuntu-mate-1804.1 desktop-i386.iso that he was saying couldn't be located is that I had encountered that same problem when I started using W10. Previously I had used W7 for years and everything I downloaded was saved to the Downloads folder of W7. That would be Programs/apps whatever, using Firefox Browser which I had set up to save DL's to the Downloads Folder, in fact it was automatically made default folder to save downloads. When I started using W10 Pro x64 I would download Drivers or Apps/Programs using Firefox browser to find the wanted software and when the DL had completed I go to the Download Folder and there was no sign of it. So I downloaded it again, and still no sign of it. Then I had the brainwave to click the folder in the FFox Download display indicator and click to 'Open folder location' and to my surprise both Downloads were there in the Users/AppData/ Temp folder. I had to Cut them from it and paste the download into the Downloads folder. I had set the default for Downloads to be the Downloads folder so why they were going into/or staying in the Temp folder I have no idea and am not asking why :D What I did from then on was do the ' Open folder location' whenever I downloaded something. End of. | kiotimak (17660) | ||
| 1457350 | 2019-01-21 06:11:00 | I too had that same problem - find the download, if you can! I now usually drop the download manager down and open the destination and there it is!!!! BUT - with Linux Mint (what I'm using mostly) that particular download never showed up in the download manager . Transmission just opened up and grabbed it and there I was - seeing something I'd never seen before and not knowing what to do with or about it . All is well, however - and I got it installed and it runs and I even got the RTL8812AU driver to install and work after a reboot . Just a question here------------- when I am done with the Terminal - I usually just type in 'exit' and Terminal goes away . I also know bout the 'reboot' command - but is there a simple 'shutdown' command? If there is, can I just su shutdownand make it work without it asking for a password? |

| 1457351 | 2019-01-22 02:16:00 | A ISO is compressed version of what ever it was created from, its designed to be in .ISO Format. What? ISOs aren't compressed at all. There are several CD/DVD image types that do use compression, such as DAA, UIF, ISZ etc but ISO is not one of them and never has been. |
