2011-02-09 07:37:00 | Son has had to get another mobo as the old one had bad caps . He picked up a very well priced Intel DG965RY board with RAM and E6300 cpu . But, it looks like you have to be careful buying older mobos if you have Win 7 . Never hit this myself, previously, but most people use XP on old mobos! Intel say they have no plans for W7 driver updates . Every now and then the power supply (Enermax Noise Taker II 420) just shuts off . Could a BIOS incompatibility do this?? The other obvious sign is that there are two bits of hardware that won't accept drivers . They are the LAN ethernet interface and a "PCI Simple Communications Controller" whatever that is! Luckily, this comp uses an add-in wireless card which works fine, W7 or not . The above driver problems are not serious unless they are the cause of the power shutdowns . The last shutdown occurred as I tried to install a LAN dvr . Coincidence or cause I don't know . CPU temps are fine . 45 under low load and 65 under sustained heavy load . Could be the PSU but it is relatively new and 420W . Guess I will have to try another PSU to test that theory . The shutoffs can take 40 min to 6 hrs . My main question, I suppose, is whether anyone has seen a BIOS problem shut the PSU down at random intervals . -------- While composing this I had a nice Indian 'lady' ask if she could fix my computer . I was beginning to think I had been overlooked! Afraid I shouted some choice words down the phone!!

2011-02-09 07:43:00 | Windows 7 will probably have drivers for most of the hardware in it anyway. Inc drivers for the sound and LAN. The PCI Simple Communications Controller is probably a modem / fax modem. There is a chipset file for Win7 32 / 64 bit for this mobo. Could be a faulty PSU. Try another. Check windowsupdate for drivers (if it doesnt have drivers). Thats if Win7 installs LAN drivers Is the E6300 CPU a 1066 FSB CPU?? If it is, it isnt listed here (www.intel.com). This mobo may only support 533 / 800 FSB CPU's

2011-02-09 08:59:00 | Thanks, guys. No modem or smart card reader installed. The E6300 is 1066 FSB - and it does run! Tried W7 driver updates (says have latest) plus Intel downloads but they just don't work. I am not worried about these dvrs now - I have disabled the problem devices. If son needs wired enet later, I'll bung in a PCI card. Biggest concern is where the power crashes are coming from. Having to wait up to 6 or so hrs makes troubleshooting a bit drawn out!!

2011-02-09 09:04:00 | Cool good the CPU works. Umm try the vista drivers then (for the devices that dont work. Also make sure ethernet is enabled in the BIOS), they should work. Remember to get the right ones (32 or 64 bit). What does it say under the LAN connection in device manager? If its not working? Is it showing a ? or an error code under the general tab, when you dbl click on the entry? If you want to know what thew PCI device is, go into its entry in device manager / details tab / change it to hardware ids. Copy and paste what it shows here

2011-02-09 21:45:00 | I would get the intel chipset drivers for the motherboard (Intel 82G965), that will allow W7 to correctly interrogate the on board hardware better and it may find your LAN drivers....(Intel® 82566DC) www.intel.com

2011-02-12 19:43:00 | After I got the win 7 image transferred to a new HDD (old one had developed errors) I had the machine running OK (sort of) except that it would power crash when put into sleep mode. At this stage my son took it home and continued the diagnosis. He managed to get the BIOS updated which failed several times here. This didn't fix the crash problems but was probably a good idea, anyway. He did manage to find a chipset generic HECI dvr that worked after W7 re-installed it with changed parameters for OS compatibility reasons. After this, the PCI simple comms error went away and sleep mode worked. It ran all night so, hopefully, the power crashes have gone now, too. So, SolMiester, thank you, you were pretty much on the button with your advice but it took some finding to get one that looked like it might work. So, talk about a saga - this must be one of the most expensive 'cheap' board changes in history!! Thanks, guys, for all suggestions.
