It was bigger than the 5.1 larger aftershock in Christchurch yesterday, that cuased more damage.

ummm its not just the size, its how shallow and close. The 5.1 CHCH aftershock was only 6KM down and 10 Km's away from CHCH + already weakened buildings. Its not possible to compare earthquake events using Richter scale alone.

Think of it this way, if you are standing 5 meters away from a 100Megaton nuclear blast you wont even be a stain on a wall. If you are 200km's away you are going to live no problem (well if your up wind of the blast :P )


Also pays to remember a 7.0 earthquake is around 10x the movement of a 6.0 and about 30x the energy.
