1136523 2010-09-17 12:52:00 and removes those useless 100kb/s upload caps that are the ultimate bane of my life. I do NOT want to have to pay another $10-30 on top of the $50 I pay for broadband so I can actually upload stuff.

Ha, good luck with Fibre then. Tried pricing up VDSL2 even? You're screwed either way ...

Areas in CHCH and Welly pay less for there phone line than those in Auckland due to the competing Telstra Hybrid fiber network. So a second competing network can work thanks to Telecom proving it for us lol.

The second part of the pricing issue is Telecom's (I mean privately owned SCC) monopoly of Capacity into NZ, and that should not be brought into discussions about FTTD as it muddies the water, "both" need to be addressed but should not be confused.

The problem is that Telstra bought out an existing operation called Saturn. They haven't done anything since then, even thru their mobile toys out of the cot a few years ago..

Thanks to NIMBY syndrome they won't ever get the chance to roll out their own network anywhere else. One of the reasons they were able to do it in Wellington was that they were allowed to run cables along power poles, which is significantly cheaper than putting them underground.

Then how come every one else who is putting in cable these days is doing it underground?? Nothing to do with NIMBYs all to do with a more robust infrastructure when put underground. Look what happens when there is a storm in an area where power cables are on polls. The power goes off where the underground areas keep their power. No TelstraClear is too stingy to roll out underground cable but will expect to piggyback on others that do in the next few years..

Yea fully aware about the history of the Saturn Network. I was astonished at the short sightedness of the Auckland city councils. Who cares if there is another cable on a already ugly power pole, and they had agreed to install underground where there were no power poles. It was good enough for a far prettier Welly and CHCH, but the Telecom lobby group was very strong.

10 years on we might have a chance to correct that rather large mistake.

1136529 2010-10-01 01:39:00 It may be that we get more than we expect with Fibre to the home.

1136530 2010-10-01 01:46:00 I wonder if the gov will be installing a duplicate fibre network in the wellingotn and christchrch region? It wouldn't really make sense, as the infrastructure is already in place, and just means consumers will be paying for duplicate infrastructure. I see telecom have hinted that if they miss out, they may just complete their own fibre network, which they have already installed quite a bit of, which will also duplicate it. In Wellinngton, we may end up with 3 fibre networks to choose from, robbyp (2751)
1136531 2010-10-01 01:53:00 Well some of us get to choose an ISP and some don't. Why not have a choice of Networks as well? Snorkbox (15764)
1136532 2010-10-01 02:16:00 I just found out I live smack on top of the 1.27tb/s Fiber back bone of NZ... problem it is about 30 or so meters under my house in a railway tunnel.

Damn
