1176799 2011-02-14 22:39:00 You don't really need to worry about the short and long tests. Anything critical would normally show up in the SMART status anyway. In saying that it won't hurt to run them just in case.

The 2nd drive I wouldn't worry about the start\stop count. It's only comparing against the average for all other drives of that model in the database. As the drive gets older that number will decrease (from 100) When it hits a certain point SMART will report that the drive is old and may be getting worn out and potentially unreliable. Your drive has just started\stopped more times than the average drive in the database.

That's weird, cos it's my D drive, just used for data storage and not accessed a lot. Ah well.

I'll just keep an eye on things and maybe leave chkdsk running when I go to bed.

Thanks for your time Agent.

1176801 2011-02-14 22:57:00 Start\Stop count refers to how many times the motor has spun up. Every time you turn on your PC the count increases (currently 7387 times) Every time you resume from standby the drive spins up and the count increases.

If your PC is set to spin the drive down during idle times then it will spin down more because it's your storage drive that you don't access as much.

1176802 2011-02-14 23:02:00 That makes sense! tuiruru (12277)
1176803 2011-02-14 23:14:00 I suggest next you test your system RAM.

I have seen (and been fooled by the first time) problems which you'd think was a faulty drive but were actually caused by bad memory.

Windows Memory tester is OK, Memtest86+ is better.

1176805 2011-02-14 23:42:00 Are you using Win7? it has a memory tester inbuilt. You can start it through start menu, then it will set itself to run when you next reboot. Agent_24 (57)
