1136493 2010-09-13 12:30:00 And CS you continue to deny that FTTD maybe useful for some people and it's NOT over to Telecom any more to continue to dictate what internet speed is available in any one area. If I happen to live in the woop woops and have a very creative daughter or son and want to give them the best available in home schooling then fibre is going to be the way to go. As things are I would have to move if I were in that situation. I do agree that what I have is adequate for my needs.

However about $100.00 per month for a landline and free local calls and a 10 Gig cap is not particularly acceptable and so therefore I'm all for a bit of competition.

Furthermore it really is up to Crown Fibre Holdings as to what contracts are issued and who gets same.

Copper is in the past like Model T fords but some people still like to use them. Fine by me if that's what they want to do. Some people around here still get by with dialup. Some people around here get by with no internet at all even. Just think of that!

Don't forget we have to pay a line maintenance charge as well for a Telecom landline and for those that choose not to have a landline then forget phoning emergency services if the power should go off unless you have a cell phone where the batteries are fully charged and etc. Yes. Possibly you can charge the cellphone off a car charger. Having a cellphone costs as well does it not?

1136494 2010-09-13 21:37:00 I was homeschooled on ADSL1 just fine. My sibblings are now on ADSL2+ and don't do anything any faster. If anything they're more distracted by the likes of Facebook during the day.

ubergeek85, FTTH won't do didly squat for data caps, in fact right now VDSL2 with Telstraclear costs INSANELY more for just as small a data cap. Don't get the two confused.
In fact, ring TelstraClear and ask them what VDSL2 costs, pretend you're in an area where you can get it.... When I last rang it was around $400 I believe?

lol you are still missing the main reason for FTTD as you do in all of these threads Chilling.

Do you think that just replacing one monopoly with another will make you happy? You might have lots of different groupings but any one area won't have that much choice of physical provider. I don't think the lines companies will be any more benevolent with their fibre than their power lines.

Whats the alternative to FTTD, leave Telecom with there monopoly another 10 years? .

Put simply if Fiber was not invented (lets forget about backhaul for a moment), I am 100% certain the government would be funding a second copper network, this is not really a Fiber vs DSL technology issue like some here believe .

I heard when people go on Telecom exchange tours, they are brainwashed by being tied to a chair and made to listen to Britney Spears over and over again until they break . Chilling is a victim, we can bring him back but its going to take time!

AFAIK it's ~USD$0.18 per-GB according to an article I saw Chris Keall write a few months back.

Here's what VDSL2 is through TelstraClear:
www.geekzone.co.nz
$399 for full-speed PLUS data on top.
