1136257 2010-09-12 04:21:00 An alternative viewpoint:

I spent a few days in NS Hospital a couple of years back and simply cannot complain about the service, or the advice of the medical staff, which saw me get a precautionary CAT scan months sooner than might otherwise have been the case.

I later spent a week in there after having a stent put in (with minor complications) and again I could not fault the services provided, given their limited resources.

The young woman of the current story had nothing worse than an inflamed appendix, which earned her a level of attention appropriate to that condition, even if not yet fully diagnosed. She was not at serious risk, and was prioritised accordingly. I have also had two close family members hospitalised by ambulance for major issues and they were dealt with in a caring and considerate fashion, but still had to wait while higher priority patients were treated.

I rather think a great deal of the problem was the mother from hell, and her daughter would have benefitted more had she set an example of calmness and reason rather than hysteria.

If that inflamed appendix had turned into a burst appendix that would have been a completely different story.

1136259 2010-09-12 08:09:00 Loud mouth drama queen like Kairua only makes things worse. While her daughter gets treated people who are stoic but sicker who dont make a scene get shuffled down the list. The hospital re jigged the priority schedule because they couldn't handle the abuse.
Then to top off her abuse she goes to the media.

1136260 2010-09-12 08:40:00 It all started just as it did in the UK when hospitals were turned into businesses and then were expected to make a profit. They are and should be a fully funded service and they should not be expected to be a profit making business gary67 (56)

She did what any good mother should do. How was she to know it wasn't an appendix about to burst or something similar. Stop being a pratt.

1136262 2010-09-12 10:11:00 Some people might say that about overseas trained pilots but arrogant isnt the word I would use I would use a word like prudent.

Somehow I think we need more doctors than we do pilots...

When you are severely understaffed and lives can be put at risk, you'd be stupid not to take fully qualified (foreign) doctors.

Although I'm not a huge fan of them taking our jobs I think if no one in NZ is stepping up to become doctors (or not enough) then leave the door open.

Half the trouble these days is that there are as many pen pushers as there are doctors and nurses involved in a hospital.

1136265 2010-09-12 19:54:00 Well I made a fuss at North SHore hospital once.

Husband is a type 1 diabetic and had had a hypo, ambulance attended at scene and took him over there because he'd banged his head and had a bit of a scratch on it.

By the time I discovered all this and went over there, he was in a bed in a cubicle waiting for a doc to come and say he could go. (This is the short version). First he had to wait ages for scan to the head etc.

I go look and find doc leaning on the nurses counter having a social chat. I wait and the conversation goes on for 24 minutes.

I go back and wait some more - meanwhile, the ambulance had revived husband but as he still hadn't eaten he was going low again. At which point I made a fuss.

Eventually, no-one else cared and I was threatened with eviction - a nurse went and found some food - when we asked her, she said she'd gone to the cafe and bought it herself.

Eventually husband and I got tired of waiting for the doc and he discharged himself.

For those of you they don't know what hypoglycemia is:

Hypoglycemia, also called low blood glucose or low blood sugar, occurs when blood glucose drops below normal levels.

Hypoglycemia can happen suddenly. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can get worse and cause confusion, clumsiness, or fainting. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma, and even death.
