1176789 2011-02-13 21:38:00 Just an update....

I downloaded the Pro version of HD Tune (free trial for 15 days) and ran all the tests just out of interest. The results for the error test are in the attachment - shows nothing is wrong. Don't know how much that can be believed - I used the thorough test but given that each little square on the chart is 122 megs I wonder how "in depth it is.

I've now got a little app running in the background monitoring all the event logs which will alert me if there are any authentication failures, warnings or errors.

I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens unless there are any other suggestions. Apart from all the restore points disappearing that time, a (very useful) little app (that turns mouse gestures into commands) I use everyday "lost" the settings that I had trained it to use.

Thanks for your input people.

Watch this space??? :(

1176790 2011-02-13 22:36:00 I'd run a checkdisk again, it could just be your filesystem is buggered? Chilling_Silence (9)

Hi Chill
What would I do about that? I'll have to run chkdsk again - it takes a looong time!

1176792 2011-02-14 02:34:00 I'll have to run chkdsk again - it takes a looong time!Sometimes chkdsk does take a long time, depends on whats wrong.

This often happens if you have large drives, lots of data. The more you have on a drive the longer it takes.

If the file system is buggered/ corrupted etc, it can throw up errors, and do all sorts of weird things.

Sometimes chkdsk simply gets stuck on a section that its trying to fix, and cant. Sooner or later it will give up with an error message - other times it simply cant fix it.
Thats when its either put back a good image, repair install or complete reinstall.

Well it did get stuck last time - there for 45 mins before i stopped it to go to bed! Next time I'll let it run 'til something happens. Now, when am I not using it for three or four hours?? ;)

OK, download this program: www.almico.com install and run it (if on Vista\Win7 may need to run as Admin)

Once it's loaded, go to S.M.A.R.T. tab and select your drive to read the attributes. Most likely you won't understand them directly so click the button to "Perform an in-depth online analysis" and see if it reports anything bad.

1176798 2011-02-14 22:29:00 Hi

Downloaded Speedfan. Ran the Indepth online test (which seemed to give the results very quickly - is that OK?) on both drives (see first 2 attachements) and it only found one little thing on my D drive. Ran the short tests on both drives and got OK's. When I go to run the extended test it gives me some results quite quickly and then seems to sit on Status: 90% of Test remaining (see 3rd attachment). What's it doing there and do I let it run?

Thanks
