1177652 2011-02-13 01:23:00 Does anyone here have experience with servers? I've encountered a problem that has me stumped.

I have a server 2008 R2 machine backing up over a 100mb network to a Seagate Blackarmour NAS using Acronis True Image. It works fine for a couple of days, then stops being able to access the smb share on the NAS drive until the server is rebooted. Rebooting the NAS drive doesn't make any difference.

If I back up using \\NAS\public then I can still access the drive from the server using the IP address. If I back up using \\10.150.96.20\public I can't access the share at all. The server can still access shares on client PCs & can access the config webpage page on the NAS.

1177653 2011-02-13 02:14:00 Are you able to ping the NAS.
Do any of the clients have problems accessing the server?
Are you able to access the NAS from another machine when the server can't?

1177654 2011-02-13 03:38:00 I can ping the NAS. Client PCs can access the NAS and the server Greven (91)
1177655 2011-02-13 04:39:00 Is this server acting as the DCHP or DNS server on the network?
Is the NAS IP static or DHCP?

1177656 2011-02-14 04:27:00 Server is both DNS and DHCP server. NAS has a static IP address. DHCP range is .50 - .199 so there isn't an IP address conflict. Greven (91)
1177657 2011-02-14 04:34:00 Is the NAS device name setup in DNS, to point to the static IP of the NAS, on the server?
I had to do that with mine as it was doing something similar.

1177658 2011-02-15 07:51:00 I have that set up now. Still having the same problem. Greven (91)
1177659 2011-02-15 07:57:00 ... I can't access the share at all.
What is the error message?
Anything relevant in Event Viewer?
Anything in the samba log on the NAS box?

1177660 2011-02-22 08:52:00 No error messages around the time of failure. Upgraded to gigabit & has been going sweet since  Greven (91)
1177661 2011-02-22 09:05:00 You could just set it up to backup to the share using the DNS name rather than the IP :) Then it saves you trying to solve one of those stupid problems.

But it did sound like a DNS/IP issue. Try adding an entry into the hosts files for the NAS if the issue remains.

Switching to gigabit should really have nothing to do with it.
