Leanna Kairua's daughter Veronica endured two weeks of hell at North Shore Hospital. Veronica, says her mother, went through unnecessary suffering for a common, though potentially lethal, complaint. This is Leanna's account.

Although, she thinks it's bad there, Southland is worse. Not that they don't care - the lack of doctors.......

This is why hospitals scare me. There is a too much incompetence and understaffing going on.

Edit: Just remembered I once went to a doc who was googling my symptoms.. Very reassuring.

1136239 2010-09-11 00:02:00 I have horror stories experienced personally for both Christchurch Hospital and Calvary Hospital more than once and with different people I have helped there including myself, it's being going on for years.

Also have stories from person who was going to work at ChCh Hospital as a radiographer after finishing training but gave it away after seeing the culture that exists there.

Think it got much worse when modern management practices were introduced in the 80's.

1136240 2010-09-11 05:39:00 Wow, that is horrible. I'd be having more than a 'mini-meltdown', I'd be standing in the nurses office and flatly refusing to leave until a doctor examined my daughter. pine-o-cleen (2955)

1136242 2010-09-11 06:19:00 What may have helped would have been to have had medical insurance. Private hospitals may not be perfect, but I have had no worries in the few times I have needed them.

We pay taxes for our 'free' medical care and so, theoretically, we should not need medical insurance, but it certainly does make a big difference when you have a problem that you would like rectified as soon as possible. Thankfully there are no waiting lists at private hospitals. What a good idea!

1136243 2010-09-11 06:31:00 One of the examples I am referring to in which there were multiple incidents of very much less than ideal care was at a private hospital, and insurance was how the person was there. zqwerty (97)

Right on!

This is why many in the US were anti-healthcare bill.

Bad things happen everywhere, at least you have a better change of surviving till you see a doc in a private hospital, or you could go and die in the waiting queue, oh well.

1136245 2010-09-11 08:37:00 Well ,when so much of our money is going into making sure prisoners are comfortable and well entertained and murderers like Weatherston gets free-on-us appeals, this is what we get. qazwsxokmijn (102)
1136246 2010-09-11 14:25:00 Only if the immigrant doctors in this country were allowed to get qualified and stat work! beeswax34 (63)
