1178908 2011-02-16 06:58:00 My XP desktop just stopped working. Going last night, nothing today.
No video, no fans, no noise at all.
Checked connections, all seemed fine.
Pulled out ram, put one back at a time, nothing.
Put in a new powersupply (550 watt), little green led lit but nothing else.
CPU, AMD XP 2500 seems to be firmly seated.
Data cable from MB to HDD is seated firmly.
Disconnected everything except mouse, video cable, HDD and keyb.

Could be MB or CPU, but I suppose substitution is the only way to tell if either of these is at fault.

Anything I might have overlooked ?

Second question, I have a Vista desktop, can I remove the HDD from the XP machine and install it into the vista machine and use it as before ?

1178909 2011-02-16 07:44:00 Sounds like Mbd to me - I don't think a crook CPU will stop fans etc from working. johnd (85)
1178910 2011-02-16 08:02:00 Did you plug the ATX 12v connection and CPU fan in again? Speedy Gonzales (78)

As the boot drive, most likely no, it will crash (incompatible motherboard and other drivers etc).
Try this if you want to proceed

Setting XP to new hardware

Option #1 Repair Install to SET XP to New Motherboard

Option #2 IDE replacement and Safe Mode procedure to SET XP to New Motherboard.

Your first question, I would guess that your motherboard has died (have a look for popped capacitors, common in computers of that age; and PSU's do it too, often with catastrophic results (killing the mobo)).

1178915 2011-02-16 19:56:00 Power switch on the case?

That's my thought as well. Try to find where the 2 wires from the Power button on the front of the case connect to the motherboard. They'll typically have something like PWR SW on the terminating block.

Remove them from the motherboard. Apply power to the computer, and briefly short these two terminals you have exposed by touching them both simultaneously with a screwdriver. If it fires up then your switch is wonky.

NOTE: Do NOT do this with the power switch in the PSU!

Just wanted to thank all who tried to help. It is/was an old computer and as I had 5 others all not working decided to toss the lot. Jeez it was amazing the amount of "spare parts" for them that I found in all sorts of odd corners.

They filled the back of a station wagon, with little space to spare. Its sort of been fun just trying to keep them going, but enough was enough !!!
