1177668 2011-02-13 02:11:00 :help: Acer Aspire 5740G laptop - screen goes black & crashes. December, it started doing silly things on the screen, like flickering & colours were looking pixelated etc. Now it completely crashes. Drivers are up to date. Have read about updating the BIOS etc but not too sure what to do. Any help appreciated. Purchased last year. Princess (7275)
1177669 2011-02-13 02:37:00 Crashes how? Does it BSOD, if so, what STOP error does it give?

Pixellated screen etc sounds to me like a dead graphics chip.

Hiya PCTek,

What it started to do during the xmas hols was the colours would appear blocky and overlapping etc - lappy freezes then the screen goes black and turns off. When we restarted, the 'windows didn't shut down properly' message appears. The drivers are all up to date etc

Haven't seen the BSOD (touch wood) and how do I get the stop error report etc?

1177671 2011-02-15 03:38:00 Reboot, press / hold F8 down till the menu appears. Select disable auto-restart. Next time (if it crashes), it should show a blue screen. Note the stop error (and the file/driver), when it comes up Speedy Gonzales (78)

Get the BSOD first though.....

Hi,

still no BSOD, despite doing the above - and yet another crash (or 2).....

Would say motherboard is toast, but harddrive probably ok, slave it to another computer with an adapter if necessary and recover your data.
