1137894 2010-09-20 22:14:00 From what I have found out it basically a crippled Freeview box that lets you record but you can't introduce any other content to run through it ,ie-AVI/MK4/ISO's

Think there are better options out there for the money

1137895 2010-09-20 22:46:00 I can watch avi/mkv files that have been transferred from computer to tivo. Haven't tried any other formats.

We bought it because SKY don't have captioned programmes. Even recorded programmes playback with captions.

This viewpoint would not be the viewpoint of the majority of people looking for a digital decoder that had the facility to record multiple channels automatically with a user friendly interface...

For the money ($360) you would be extremely hard-pressed to get anything along the same lines that was as easy to use as a TiVo box.

If you're a geek with special requirements then TiVo is not for you.

1137898 2010-09-21 00:39:00 Briefly... what does it do that the freeview box does not do? In non-tech terms please.....

I'm still wondering what it is all about.

We have a DVD recorder and we have a satellite dish ready to put on the roof (terrestrial Freeview is not available in our area - only via satellite).

So is there any advantage for me to get it? Is the only advantage the ability to record two programs at once?

1137899 2010-09-21 00:44:00 Considering you can basically only get channels 1 2 3 and prime that are of any use I can't see the time when you would ever need to record 2 programs at once. Safari (3993)
1137900 2010-09-21 00:47:00 Hi Strommer.
I'm much in your position, except that the dish was left on the roof by the previous house owner and I connected a freeview box to it. Seems to do good, receives 1, 2, 3 4 and Prime, Maori, Stratos, CUE, Te Reo, Parliament, Austalian SBS1 and 2, TV3 Plus1, Kordia and Tvnz Spors extra. All with perfect pictures. I too have a DVD recorder. So, apart from recording extra stuff or playing back while recording, what woiuld I get for my dollar?

So MKVs work fine then?? If that's the case I'll buy the Home network package as my A100 Popcornhour is starting to show it's age a bit recently . .

A unified box . Only one device to setup . I was using a setup like yours . A DVD recorder a a TV DTT box and when i wanted to record something I had to set up the record timers on both units and couldn't watch anything else while this was happening . . For $360 it's a bargain compared to other DVRs on the market here . .

I had transferred one file - worked fine. I told a friend who tried it (different file) and it didn't work. I don't really understand mkv's but I think they are like avi's - containers that can hold different file formats?
