2011-02-14 00:33:00 | I'm asking a question where I think I already know the answer but in desperation I'll ask. We run a Hostel - two floors, and have a wireless modem on each floor for tenants to surf. No other programming, etc. Unfortunately some of our tenants Skype non-stop to their homeland, with the effect that our bandwith is gone within days. Each modem is running on a 20 Gig Telecom plan. Any way to stop people Skyping? I don't think so, but it's worth an ask. sarel

I suggest you disable the WiFi on that router, and get yourself either a Linksys WRT54GL or an Accton MR3201 router, and pop Gargoyle onto it. Not only can you then set quotas per-machine, but you can also block certain ports. Granted that's a bit of a PITA for Skype as it falls back to Port 80 and Port 443, but I'm sure some blocking of certain DNS address could also work? |

2011-02-14 03:24:00 | Stick a firewall between the modem and the network, block the program from using the ports. | nedkelly (9059) | |
2011-02-14 04:08:00 | Thats just it, it uses Port 80 and Port 443 ... Block that and you block web browsing traffic and secure SSL connections :-/ | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2011-02-14 04:47:00 | could you use the firewall to block all the IPs which skype connects to when it logs in? | utopian201 (6245) | |
