2011-02-13 23:36:00 | I uninstalled JV16 Powertools using Revo Pro traced uninstall, clearly rash and idiotic thing to do, XP SP3 won't start, including in safe mode +/- command prompt etc. Startup hangs at the windows logo, or if trying to log in in safe mode with command prompt, at loading of the file hotcore3.sys, a Paragon backup and restore file. I have managed to use a Paragon restore disk to get to a DOS command, Y : DOS. I need to either (or both): 1) Navigate to and delete or rename the Paragon file hotcore3.sys (should be in Progfiles\Paragon dir) 2) if that fails, restore to my last Windows restore point, taken before the uninstall. (Typing in cmd or %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe gets me a 'bad command or file name" message). Any guidance appreciated! I am even having trouble working out how to change directories.

2011-02-13 23:59:00 | Hmmm.. this is a Linux rescue disk so maybe this is Linux DOS - ls works for directory list, but not man to see the help info. Could also be paragon DOS, which I can't seem to find any intelligible info on either.

2011-02-14 00:54:00 | Have you got the XP cd then? Is it Home or Pro? Remove the hdd and put it in a working system. Then delete hotcore3.sys | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-02-14 00:54:00 | If you could get into safe mode with command prompt its easy. 1.Boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt 2.At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Press Enter. Follow the instructions given to perform the System Restore process. But since its playing up, you can do it Via a XP CD, but its quite long list of commands, do you have one ? IF you do, then download These instructions (www.box.net) print them off and follow them to the letter.

2011-02-14 01:04:00 | Thanks for the replies. Speedy - it may come to that, prob is none of the family has a machine with sata drives. I'll find one though if it comes to that. My old computer has ide drives unfortunately. wainuitech - I can't get into safe mode/command prompt via F8, the boot hangs at loading hotcore3.sys. I do have an XP OEM DVD, and tried to choose the repair option, but it wants me to load a floppy disk I don't have (can't remember the name), and I don't have a floppy drive in the thing anyway. I have been able to get the Paragon backup function up and running, and am backing up new files on my desktop since my last backup, to D drive. It is unbelievably slow, but I'm keen to let it do its thing, which will take another 30 mins or so. Will try the XP DVD again and see what else I can get to. I have a couple of DVDs for XP, all OEM but will have a go. Thanks for your help, I'll post an update when I get under way again.

2011-02-14 02:00:00 | Still no luck. Wainuitech - I have a Windows OEM CD that will boot, but it gives me a couple of options (one is to load a floppy to run Automated System Recovery, the other is to install a 3rd party scsi or raid driver), and then proceeds to start copying Windows setup files. I don't get an option that allows me to proceed according to the instructions you linked to. ("Boot from the Windows CD. Select R to enter Recovery Console"). Thanks anyway, I suspect I might have to find another computer and fiddle around with my drive that way, see if I can fix it.

I don't get an option that allows me to proceed according to the instructions you linked to . ("Boot from the Windows CD . Select R to enter Recovery Console") . . Ignore the driver request . It will stop twice for your input . The first screen says Install or Press R for Recovery Console . You'll see it when it gets there . |

2011-02-14 04:16:00 | Thanks, PCTek - I was a bit worried about carrying on in case I did a clean install and blew away the last couple of weeks' files. Wainuitech - thanks for the link, the instructions worked a treat, the restore went easily, though I had to use the long version of the instructions, but all good. Thanks everyone, for all your help.
