1177662 2011-02-13 02:10:00 My friend brought his Dell Inspiron 1545 lapie yesterday because of virus infection. Checked and found that it's badly infected and suggested to re install Win 7, after all, all his important data backed up.

Surprisingly, I found that there isn't any Windows COA sticker at the bottom of the lapie and apparently, also found that there's no recovery partition exists. He hasn't got the Windows install DVD, too.

Went online to check the status of this unit and found that the HDD has been changed to 250GB (original : suppose to be 500GB) and should come with Windows 7 Home Prem DVD media, as well.

He bought it from a retail shop.

Then all you need is a Windows 7 DVD (or a copy of one) and it'll work just fine... Some might say a copy would be illegal but the key is really what you need to worry about, as long as that's legit then you're not really pirating anything.

1177666 2011-02-13 05:13:00 Sadly, not able to load Windows now. Run self-diagnosis from BIOS and found that the HDD is faulty - another WD hard drive issue. Took a closer look, found that one of the two screws securing the HDD is missing and the other is loosened. Suspecting that when the retailer swapping the HDD, they did not secure it properly.

Anyway, suggesting my friend to contact the retailer for any explanation. Problem is, he couldn't find the receipt for this laptop! and he thinks that the warranty is over.

I removed the HDD and checked online the status of the HDD that it's still under warranty - he saves a few dollars.

Have been looking all over but still no signs of the COA sticker. Is it possible to buy the OS DVD from DELL?

1177667 2011-02-13 05:54:00 You may still be able to get the key back, but you'd have to do it manually.

This is for XP: www.dagondesign.com

They say it works for Vista, don't know about Windows 7. Probably can but I guess you'd need to load a different file and use a different program.

If you can recover the registry or one of the parts of it from the hard drive you might be in luck, even if Windows won't boot.

Some of those keyfinder programs might work if they can scan a hard drive which is not the boot drive. I don't know, I hardly ever use them...
