1180105 2011-02-20 23:23:00 Hi
A "little Old lady" has given me her laptop to look at because it's running slowly. It's an Acer Aspire 3610 Running XP SP2 with an Intel Celeron M Processor 370 1.5 Ghz, 400 MHz FSB 1MB L2 cache, 256MB RAM (yep:horrified) 60gb HD (according to the sticky label on the keyboard.

In normal mode it is slower than a tedious craaaaawl! I haven't seen it for over a year and in that time somebody ("a teenager who knows what he's doing" :D) has put MSSE on it so my first question is will removing it for the moment speed things up? (It's in Safe mode at the moment and not too bad).

The curious thing is that although it's supposed to be a 60gb hard drive "Properties" in "My Computer" is showing 18.6 GB used, 7.61 gb Free Total Capacity 26.2 GB!!?? So, where has the other half of the 60 GB gone?

Any thoughts (besides the obvious ones about the specs - I thought I was just going to have to get rid of unwanted crap on the HDD to free up some space) gratefully received

Thanks

1180106 2011-02-20 23:25:00 Probably there is a hidden recovery partition on it using some of the 60 Gig. Snorkbox (15764)
1180107 2011-02-20 23:26:00 Look in disk management / see if the other partition appears here. And see if its in use. Celerons arent exactly fast. And putting more ram in it, will probably make it a bit faster Speedy Gonzales (78)

What little app could I use to see that?

1180109 2011-02-20 23:28:00 Maybe start with CCleaner, then defragging, e.g. with smart defrag (www.iobit.com). Is 60 GB a standard HD capacity though? Thought it would be at least twice that. kahawai chaser (3545)

Hi Speedy, the point is it never used to be anywhere near this slow and she had AVG on it before which is why I was asking about MSSE. It's fairly reasonable in safe mode
