1138245	2010-09-19 02:25:00	Hiya, we are planning on a trip to the S Island again this Christmas. Like to know some recommendations for food places - folks are into asian food like yum char. 2 Christmas ago when wer were there, there weren't much, we tried the place across from the waterfront. Doing a search, we went to Mandarin Restaurant - that sucked - no dumplings, from the looks of it many foods were frozen and reheated. Also tried Memoirs of Hong Kong for dindin but the crackling pork sucked. We then just went to the supermarket and cooked indoors. I plan to do some landscape photography and imitate Andris Apse :p Like to hear some suggestions. We got some for Christchurch already but like to know some as well in case some are closed for Christmas and thanks again to Bob, we have a list saved and printed re: Auckland :cool: :D	Nomad (952)

1138247	2010-09-19 04:23:00	Thanks for that, I asked at Lonely Planet as well hoping some tourists can advise me on that. We went to Memoirs of HK for dinner but the crackling pork was chewy. Mandarin Restaurant only had like 5 or 8 selections on a photo menu, they didn't have the traditional carts that you find in Wellington, Christchurch (probably) and most certainly Auckland. They didn't even have dumplings or egg tarts, they had dim sums I think but you squeeze them and water came out - they are supposed to be steamed without any liquid/broth. When we were there therw were only 1 table of chinese bus tourists and I think a travelling couple from JP. They didn't stay for long, 15mins and they were out, :p They could of changed but want advise of who's actually been there ..	Nomad (952)

1138250	2010-09-19 11:37:00	You could always just try eating some of the wonderful, local produce that is available in Central Otago . . . . :rolleyes: I wouldn't ask for slow-braised rabbit and wild thyme pie in a restaurant in Kowloon for example .	nofam (9009)
1138251	2010-09-19 12:14:00	If money was no object then why not try non-Asian foods? That's what I like to do on the rare occasions when I travel a bit far from Auckland. I think I'll be driving down to South Island either the end of this year or next year....hopefully with enough money so I can afford some Kiwi food, which is usually disproportionately more expensive than Asian food! Nofam, that dish sounds tasty - only if you replace the rabbit with beef or lamb!	qazwsxokmijn (102)

They not into that much salads or breads either .. nor pasta. Thai and Viet could be an option thou, heard those might be a bit better.
