| 1180125 | 2011-02-21 03:10:00 | things to try remove ALL AV's - Corrupt AV can slow the laptop. MSSE can also cause really bad slowdowns (its rare though) then scan with malware bytes see if the CPU is stuck in power saving mode, it may be stuck at 1/3 speed:ctl panel , system, & see if Actual CPU speed ever its full tit in use. Try adjusting power saving mode to full CPU when plugged in. disable all google services : services.msc check the scheduled tasks(control panel) & disable all run msonfig, disable all startups & non ms services & re-enable one by one - it will take some time. You donty need alot of RAM in XP UNTILL you start opening files & programs. ie whats the speed like after XP starts up(give it a good 4 minutes) with no programs running.- browsing the HD, time taken to open control panel or IE etc et Defrag will not do a thing to help you . You said its OK in safe mode. OK I'll have a look at some of that -watch this space! |

| 1180126 | 2011-02-21 03:22:00 | the best thing for performance is to do a fresh install, can be tedious to back up and recover all the files and programs though. Also a note on MSSE, as much as I like it on my modern PC a recent play with a 1.6G sempron with 1G of RAM showed 75-90% cpu usage on a quick scan which was going to take 30min + on a fresh install of windows (as opposed to 1-2% and <3min on a quad core with a lot of bloat). It doesn't seem to cause any performance hit when not actively scanning though. With a PC of that age you want to keep software installed to the minimum and MSSE may not be the way to go. |
