1181191 2011-02-24 10:06:00 I am more of a user than a hacker ... and I don't upgrade freq. I know what is sort of out there but what would be good as a admin computer? MS Office, Internet, maybe Skype etc ..

*onboard graphics pref.
*2GB 4GB is plenty.

I see that i3 CPU might cost $200, cheaper is the Athlon X2 or X4 is it? Phenom is close to i3 prices too.

I understand i7 is king, i5 is an excellent tradeoff. How is i3 like? Is that like a Celeron or .. and what about the AMD Athlon and Phenoms?

Not my computer, but connected the a MFU therefore I need x32 OS, as x64 does not support it. Currently it's a P3-600 laptop, 320MB does the job but it's not really suited as a everyday device.
:thanks

1181192 2011-02-24 10:10:00 i3 is to i7 as Celeron is to Pentium 4. However don't let that fool you, as i3 CPUs are still quite capable. qazwsxokmijn (102)
1181193 2011-02-24 10:12:00 According to wikipedia

The Core i3 was intended to be the new low end of the performance processor line from Intel, following the retirement of the Core 2 (en.wikipedia.org) brand.[17] (en.wikipedia.org)[18] (en.wikipedia.org)

The first Core i3 processors were launched on January 7, 2010.[19] (en.wikipedia.org)

The first Nehalem based Core i3 was Clarkdale (en.wikipedia.org)-based, with an integrated GPU (en.wikipedia.org) and two cores.[20] (en.wikipedia.org) The same processor is also available as Core i5 and Pentium, with slightly different configurations.

The Core i3-3xxM processors are based on Arrandale (en.wikipedia.org), the mobile version of the Clarkdale desktop processor. They are similar to the Core i5-4xx series but running at lower clock speeds and without Turbo Boost (en.wikipedia.org).[21] (en.wikipedia.org)

1181194 2011-02-24 21:06:00 with the uses you mention any modern pc will be fine. Uless you buy an atom based machine that is :) dugimodo (138)
1181195 2011-02-24 21:51:00 any modern PC that isn't a brandname one.

It's hard to find a brand name that's of decent quality for a decent price.
Still, it's not much you're after, so you could settle for a halfway decent brand name. But you'd still get better going to a PC shop like PB tech or Computer lounge (CL would be your best bet TBH, they're very newbie friendly)

I will check the others but CL has $99 Athlon X2 255 CPU and $105 Gigabyte mobo and $59 2GB sticks with the heat covers (Corsair).

i3 CPU is $159 and the motherboard is like a crazy $159 as well approx ..

It's not our main PC, just streamlining it really.

1181197 2011-02-24 23:32:00 Just configured a new HP pro 3130 with the i3 @ 3.2ghz, dual core with HT and I can tell you now its nothing like a Celeron replacement.
The old Celly's were rubbish, this i3 is faster than previous gen E8400.

1181198 2011-02-25 00:03:00 Yeah I just got me one of these a few months back, and have since on-sold about a dozen to other people:
pbtech.co.nz

Freaking *amazing* machine for that price, including the 512MB dedicated graphics (Definitely not top of the line, but great for almost everything).
Cheaper than half the desktops I've seen too :D

Thanks for that, that might be something bro when he begins study.
Does it support 4GB and how much would that cost about?

OTOH I might just spend $250 for an Athlon X2 and get that PC print server running a bit better than the P3 as it's now.

1181200 2011-02-25 00:20:00 Yes, it does support 4GB, just search PBTech.co.nz for "hp i3" and you'll see the next model up. Chilling_Silence (9)
