1180939 2011-02-23 02:30:00 Hi Team

This is a follow on from my previous thread, but the substance is different.

I installed an alternative (older) version of SkypeMate that came with the phone and the phone is now live and apparently ready to go.

Now I need to know how to open a VOiP connection to another computer, or find an explanation of how this is done.

Seems to me it should be the same as the Skype Video, you see that the other party is on line and available, so you call them, but while I accept that I don't have anybody on line to call yet, I should be able to find some description of how it is supposed to work.

Do I just click on the contact and if so, do I get an option for video or phone?

It shouldn't be this hard, but I'm damned if I can find anything helpful on line or in Skype's own help files. Seems they don't want to encourage straight VOiP calls.

Cheers

1180940 2011-02-23 02:48:00 Are you sure it can do VoIP (Through the SIP protocol)?

I know that while Skype is technically Voice over IP, it is it's own proprietary protocol that doesn't interop with anything else, let alone standard SIP providers?

I'm pretty positive it does VOiP, and quite by accident I think I have finally discovered how to connect!

I had Skype open because I was looking for clues as to how it worked, and I pressed the 'Call' (Green) button on the phone. That didn't do anything, but I pushed it again in frustration and whadayaknow!! it opened up a Skype session with the familiar window for a Skype call, but without the video pane, however my daughter's name came up on the Phone LCD display. Pressing the 'End Call' (Red) button on the phone closes the window. :clap

It all makes sense now (sort of) though I have yet to actually prove it by making a call, but I'm sure I'm right.

I really can't understand why such a simple but essential piece of information was not included with the phone, in SkypeMate, or in Skype itself.

Just found that you don't even need Skype open, it will open it for you at the first press on the phone.

Nope, never heard of that either. There's a real shortage of practical V0iP info out there, either that or I don't know how/where to look. All I know is that I'm slowly getting there by trial and error, and a good dose of logical/rational thinking.

Trouble is, you can't think about things you have no knowledge of, so you have to fall back on first principles and logic, neither of which produce strong leads.

I usually end up with 'there's gotta be a way' or 'it's gotta be here somewhere!' followed some time later by 'expletive deleted'.

So, where do I find this "Test call"?

Cheers

1180947 2011-02-26 06:16:00 Another example of inadequate information/descriptions .

I saw the echo/sound-test option but because as I understood it, my application woiuld not have echo problems, and I didn't want to do a sound check per se, I just ignored it .

As it stands I'm 99% sure that I can make a phone connection without problems, though how I get there may be a bit long-winded . So, now we are packing a second box to rush over all the stuff that was left behind because it wasn't necessary and she now finds she does need, plus the stuff that was left behind because it wouldn't fit, so we will include the phone in that lot .

Cheers
