1140441 2010-09-29 01:54:00 Got a debate going on about tone, tone woods and promulgation of sound waves through wood - especially in a slab-bodied bass guitar .

Please leave out any hollow-bodied and therefor acoustically resonant sound boxes on a regular guitar as we won't consider any basses like that for this argument .

All bassists are tone-whores, so I - on my side - am trying to debate that wood sucks tone(s) out by attenuation and not any form of amplification or increasing resonance by any amplitude at all .

Wood is passive - and whatever energy dynamics that are in it are only released when you burn it .

As far as sound processing - I can see some attenuation of certain groups or clusters of frequencies - but to amplify requires energy IN .

Anyway - one person stated that Faraday found more energy coming out of a device that was input .

Can someone help me call this bluff?

1140446 2010-09-29 03:14:00 From what I understand, it's all about density. The ultimate guitar would be made out of concrete.. of course it would be heavy and tiring to play...

Cheap guitars are made out of lighter wood which is why they sound crap. Wood being cheaper cos it grows faster (as a tree :p) so therefore slower growing trees produce denser wood. Denser wood makes better guitars and produces better resonance which makes sustain etc.

I don't think amplification is really a factor especially in sold body guitars. All materials will absorb to a certain degree, so there is no way that output could be bigger than input. If it was, you'd have feedback problems :p

1140447 2010-09-29 04:14:00 Carbon fibre body with nano technology sound baffling between 10 micron layers in 45deg opposing directions .... and of course you'd need a piece of railway iron to form into the neck to make sure it didn't warp too much and start harmonic distortions.

Only drawback would be ... the balance would be a little off
