1139462 2010-09-24 23:15:00 Well I have managed to have 6 years of working since my shoulder surgery in 04 but been having some problems a bit lately so having had 2 visits to the Dr and having had ultrasound and X-rays it seems my shoulder is pulling itself apart again, won't know for certain how bad until I can get to see the surgeon who did the original repair.

My Dr's advice yesterday was "you need to give up your profession".

So now the quandary of trying to find something else to do that doesn't involve too much physical labour, it's not going to be easy as I have been a carpenter and joiner for about 26 years in fact I did my apprenticeship straight from school at 16.

Bummer and so it all starts today :waughh:

1139464 2010-09-24 23:41:00 I got the same chill a couple of days ago . The "C" word came up .

I actually quit working August 11th, 2004 or so for a full-on medical disability claim . It's kinda nice and kinda strange to not have to work and just have a check hit the bank on the 22nd of each month with no physical outlay from me .

This is for osteoporosis, spinal compressive fractures, spinal stenosis, peripheral neuropathy, Chronic/Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, arthritis, detached retinas, fractured pelvis-unresolvable, broken-unresolvable left hip and a few other minor things .

All the above is prolly from Agent Orange in the US Navoo .

I say take the early retirement and if your Social Security system allows it - just do some menial work for your kip & grog and chill out .

Somehow it has become a national disgrace to be disabled - but actually with the huge amount of people with no option to ever find work again in their lifetime, I think I have been handed a golden parachute .

Besides; this opens whatever fields we were in to n00bs now .

All of us who had a serious work-ethic just merrily threw our bods into the fire to perform the functions as bread winner - and now we get to reap some of the rewards . I have been poisoned, burned, hammered, impaled, fell off roofs (multiple times - maybe even on my head a time or two) and been run-over, frozen, knocked out, tear gassed and shot at by angry people in foreign lands who didn't speak my language, nor me theirs .

It's time .

You think?

ACC are geared towards getting you off the books and its cheaper to bounce you onto a sickness or disability benefit then to fix you or retrain you. They will just him through the system and then get his case re-categorised so it doesn't fall within ACC parameters and thats where it ends....

The smirk that appeared on my ACC case managers face when I mentioned re-training was the beginning of the end.

Excellent, now just look at management and supervisor jobs, the pay is better and it doesn't hurt the body.

1139467 2010-09-25 00:31:00 Or, if you have the patience, maybe a teaching role, to pass on your many years of experience... johcar (6283)
1139468 2010-09-25 01:58:00 kick back on acc

Haha. ACC will say this is an age related condition. Doesn't even matter if he broke it right now - it would be caused my weakening due to age.

ACC are now there only to try an prevent people from successfully claiming.

You work for yourself? Can you take on staff and just be the boss?

1139470 2010-09-25 03:41:00 You wouldn't want ACC to get a whiff of your caving interests while you are on their books. Good luck. Scouse (83)
1139471 2010-09-25 04:25:00 Although they paid for the original fix and the year of recovery this time so far they aren't having any part of it, they turned me down for a progressive claim, which is why I need to see the surgeon see if he can persuade them otherwise. I keep the caving stuff far from their prying eyes. I have stopped over winter and not going to re start until I get the all clear if ever.

Not self employed unfortunately
