| 1180812 | 2011-02-23 21:15:00 | Is there any diagnostics for capacitors? Normally a visual inspection, but of course they can go bad without looking like it. You could check the outputs with a scope to see the level of ripple, if the capacitors have died the ripple will be higher than normal. This works with PSUs, don't know about VRMs on motherboards. I don't even know what level of ripple is tolerable at the output anyway. Best way instead is to use an ESR meter, pull the capacitor out and test ESR. Or, if you don't care about potentially losing money, just replace the capacitors and see if it helps.... Of course the motherboard capacitors might be OK but the PSU ones might be shot, and you'd get the same problems. |
