1139937 2010-09-27 06:55:00 The country is borrowing 250 Million $ a week just to maintain our current standard of living, the only thing I want to see is plans to boost business and productivity.

This is where MMP sucks, the small parties will make all sort of spend promises to get elected over what needs to be done.

1139939 2010-09-27 07:28:00 Today I went over to Raewards, our local greengrocer, at SWMBO's instructions to buy among other things a lettuce. But the lettuces were $2.99 for puny looking, heartless things. I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on something that seemed such poor value, even though I knew I was countermanding my explicit instructions. There were tomatoes there also for $6.99 a kilo, but they looked awful - more white than red. From Feb to May, lettuces and tomatoes will be under $2 and they will be delicious.

Actually, we can afford to buy these things without ever thinking about the cost, but we choose not to at this time of the year.
On the other hand, NZ oranges were $1.29 a kilo, so I bought a kilo or two of those.
My point is that the GST on fruit and vegetables is irrelevant. The price is governed by supply and demand.

I purchased two tomatoes last night 10 bucks a kilo

Labour want to put up the price of smokes to pay for the gst taken off fresh fruit and veges but what will happen if every one quits smoking??

1139941 2010-09-27 23:01:00 I can see this being rather difficult anyway. If I were to go to a shop and buy a salad sandwich I take it they would have to take the GST off the lettuce but put the GST on the salad dressing etc.

Like most things dreamed up by Govt. Unworkable and not enforceable.
