2011-02-25 06:30:00 | My Sisters desktop refuses to shut down from the start menu. You can bring up the start menu/shut down computer but when you click on it the computer seems to freeze. It will not bring up the menu for Shutdown/Restart/Logout. If you hit ctrl-alt-del it will bring up the task manager. You can select shutdown from there and it will at least go through the motions but seems to hang 75% of the time. Just trying to get the shutdown menu working before I try and figure out which program or service is hanging the shutdown. Tried google but not much luck.

2011-02-25 11:43:00 | Whats using up the CPU usage? According to the task manager nothing. It has a couple of percent for usage. The desktop however is completely locked up. The mouse moves but you can't click anything. Think something is corrupt but can't find what. SFC reports okay.

2011-02-25 20:30:00 | Try chkdsk (support.microsoft.com) Nothing wrong with the disk as it was defragged and the chkdsk is part of the defrag.

IF it does, then start normally, click start/Run msconfig Startup tab, disable every application/program thats not needed, reboot and see if it works. If it does then problem solved - as most of these programs dont need to run anyway, with the exception of backup programs and maybe the odd one you use. One way is to force windows to shut down via reg hack - As per here (blogs.howtogeek.com)- just a warning, dont go lowering the times to low, it will cause corruption - that site advises the "safe" times. |

2011-02-27 18:42:00 | The thing is that you cant get to the shutdown to shut it down. The menu simply will not come up so it does not even get to shutdown. Clicking on the shutdown button should bring up the menu box in the middle of the screen. It does not do this but simply locks up so nothing except ctrl-alt-del works and the mouse moves. Bring up the task manager through ctrl-alt-del and you can select shutdown from there and it does okay but the first way is no way. | veldthui (15543) | |
