1181125 2011-02-24 03:12:00 Hi,

I am having periodic freezes, which I initially blamed on my router- which incidently did have a problem or three.I have been told I have a popped capacitor, which is still working

Now the computer is going reasonably well, has the odd freeze --but as it is about 9 years old- a P4, 2 gb DDR400 ram,3.06 CPU,using windows7 Pro,what future has it.

In the resultant scramble to correct router failures, I came to wonder if I should bite the bullet and upgrade

I have been offered ( from a dealer ) a tower, mother board (CPU : Intel E5500 2.8GHz dual core--2 gb DDR3 ram--500 gb hardrive--opitical driveDVD Writer--case, Easteck-ET-3380BSR 420 watt, and using my other compatible hardware , should be up and running for a reasonable fee.

As I said this machine after a severe crash is now going very well as before

Question :-
Is this a "cheap and future problem set up", and will it have me backed into a corner with a limited life, poor performance and upgrade potential, or not

I have had a " annus horriblus " year like her majesty the queen :(
and between nursing my wife and using a computer am I jumping out of a frying pan into a fire thereby shutting myself off?

My wife is very slowly regaining her health so it means I can get back to my computer with a clear concience- this is not a frivoulus query wanting sympathy, but is my old age retirement occupation. I used to use 10 gb Broadband space a month--lately down to 6 or 7 gb, as she gets better,I use more and more space

How much is this costing you?

1181127 2011-02-24 03:21:00 an E5500 is still a quite capable machine but at the same time has been superseded twice since it was current and as such compatible hardware is beginning to dissappear.

If you decide to upgrade I think you would be better looking at an i3 or i5 or phenom X4 which would bring you into the current generation.

An 1156 based i3 or i5 would also still be a good choice but again has been superseded by 1155 (sandy bridge i3, i5, i7) - lot more current than E5500 though which I believe is a socket 775 Core 2 family CPU

EDIT: - I would also want 4G of RAM personally for a modern PC

1181128 2011-02-24 03:27:00 Hi Cato
cost tower only $425--- from the following on replies it would appear my suspicions are correct

1181129 2011-02-24 03:41:00 A Phenom X2 will cost about the same as the E5500 (Phenom X4 if you can stretch the budget a bit) with a AM3+ motherboard, so you'll still find hardware later than the Intel's 775 which has already twice been superseded. Cato (6936)

1181131 2011-02-24 04:17:00 It does not matter, everything is 64bit these days.
The only issue with having 32bit Win 7 is that you won't be able to use 4gb of ram - windows will only see around 3.4gb of Ram if you have 4 installed.

A 64bit CPU can run both 32bit and 64bit OS's. Though it might run faster on 64bit.

E5500 is a Pentium Dual Core, built on 45nm. It's a Budget CPU. However I think an AMD Athlon II X2 is a better option, both in terms of performance and price.

1181133 2011-02-24 04:29:00 See if the board can support a better CPU as upgrading the CPU may not cost much

Take it has a Graphics card and not on board graphics

1181134 2011-02-24 05:20:00 Won't a 775 chipset use DDR2 RAM and not DDR3? gary67 (56)
