1180963 2011-02-23 07:20:00 Hi

I have a VirtualBox install of W7 64 bit I have used before. I can test it with a Ubuntu host and all is fine. When I transfer it to a W7 32 bit host, no changing of settings will get it to boot - I get a very quick BSOD before a reboot is triggered. I have checked that VirtualBox can cope with a 64bit OS install on a 32 bit host - should be able to. I have checked that virtualization is OKed in the CMOS setup.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

1180964 2011-02-23 19:27:00 How do you expect to run x64 instruction set on x86 platform? Are you sure Virtualbox can run x64 on a x86 host?, because if it can, its the only virtualisation platform that does! SolMiester (139)
1180965 2011-02-23 21:11:00 Does your CPU support 64bit instruction set? If so, you can install a 64bit VM on a 32bit host.

Check your processor (downloads.vmware.com) to see if it's compatible and enable VT instruction set in the BIOS if it is.

it will do as long as virtualization is turned on in the CMOS settings. I am currently running Ubuntu 64 bit as a VM on W7 32 bit. I don't know about other virtualization platforms - but VBox will certainly do this.

1180967 2011-02-24 06:05:00 But anyway - I have got around the problem. It seems for some reason the VBox environment running on Ubuntu is in some ways incompatible with the Windows one for W7. If I install the VM on Windows instead of Linux, all is fine. W7 is the only OS I have had this issue with.

Thanks people.

Well, that's news to me, VB must bypass the host and get instructions directly from the CPU, which is weird as the host o/s on type 2 hypervisors usually handles virtualisation commands.

1180969 2011-02-24 22:37:00 I was running VBox on Windows 7 64bit for a while I had Ubuntu, Mint and Puppy all running well often at the same time. Not for any real reason just playing and learning gary67 (56)
1180970 2011-02-25 08:27:00 Well I have got x64 to get into the install menu on 86 architecture just yesterday. Works fine. as for actually running i'm not sure.

make sure IO APC (IOAPC) is enabled in virtual box. that may be your stop error. 64 won't run properly without it.
