Especially what version of drivers you are using (if nvidia propriety)?

I'm getting around ~120mb+ and 30-60% CPU usage on a Athlon 3200 64, OpenSuse 11.3, nvidia propriety drivers 260.19.

Thanks!Xorg memory and CPU usage will change a lot depending on what you're trying to do with it.

The CPU usage sounds way too high - perhaps you're using software rendering or something. Could you paste the output of glxinfo here please?

It's quite hard to comment on the memory use without knowing what you're running - can you list what you have open / active at the time you got that figure?

If you're trying to figure out which processes are causing X to use excessive resources, xrestop is a great tool for this.

xrestop is only showing usage of ~70 atm, with plasma-desktop at 21mb & kwin floating between 14-24mb .

System monitor on the otherhand is picking up 129 . 5 (I assume memory is reserved?) with CPU usage floating around 40% .

Only thing running right now is Chrome and Skype .

Edit: I run KDE 4 . 6, but gnome was nearly as bad when I tried it .

1180689 2011-02-23 23:29:00 Your glxinfo output looks fine - X definitely shouldn't be eating up that much CPU time.

Memory usage sounds about right, nothing to worry about there. The memory that xrestop doesn't show as allocated to something is likely to be pool memory that was previously allocated to something, but is now available for reuse.

Just to double-check here, which process is actually using all the CPU time?

I did an upgrade (CPU memory ram) yester and now all four my cores are pretty much constantly running between 10-40%...

Xorg got up to over 260mb this morning...

If you do what you just did, X will simply bail, and you won't get any useful data about what it's actually doing to eat that much CPU.

Note also that if you're going to start it on anything other than the 'X' binary, you'll need to tell strace to follow forks.


Just seems too much...Well that statement is a complete shot in the dark, and most likely incorrect. There's nothing wrong with X using that much memory, provided it's actually doing something useful with it (e.g. raw caching of rendered web pages), and you don't have an X client that leaks pixmaps or something (the twitter plasmoid in earlier versions of KDE4 was notorious for this).

Unless you have a valid reason other than "this looks like a large number", there's not really much point in pursuing it.
