1182156 2011-02-28 09:55:00 Understand that Intel has some issues with their new Sandy Bridge CPUs. Have they fixed it or still advisable to steer away from it for the time being? bk T (215)
1182157 2011-02-28 10:05:00 According to this article, news.cnet.com it depends on how you use it :)

I read somewhere that only SataII devices are affected.

1182158 2011-02-28 10:07:00 Long story short, it's not too big of a problem, especially if you only have two HDDs. And the problem is NOT the CPUs - they are perfectly fine.

The problem is in one of the SATA controllers in the P67 chipset. The P67 series motherboards have two SATA controllers - one SATA3 controller that controls two SATA3 ports; and one SATA2 controller that controls four SATA ports. It's the latter SATA2 controller that's the problem. Intel estimates anywhere between 5-15% of these controllers to degrade over time (i.e., you will notice lowering HDD performance over a few years and an eventual loss of connection).

They are releasing a new line of motherboards with the revised chipset that will fix this problem very soon, probably in a month. My suggestion is just wait a month or two until the new revised chipset comes out, then buy your Sandy Bridge platform.

1182159 2011-02-28 19:56:00 Yep, I'm wanting to upgrade my system to the 2500K CPU and am resisting the temptation to buy a "broken" motherboard - although the supplier will replace it when the new stock is in. Playtech told me the new boards (H67) are due to land early March. Richardd150 (13927)
1182160 2011-02-28 19:58:00 There are a lot of replacements programs offered by Asus, Gigabyte etc.

Computer Lounge will even let you buy a mobo now and swap it when the good ones come in.

1182161 2011-02-28 20:48:00 Thanks for all the info.

Looks like it's best to wait for the new MB rather than buy it now and replace it later! Even if they promised to replace it when the new MB arrives.

That's a conspiracy, I tell ya!!

And this is how it goes:

You buy an MB & CPU. They replace your faulty MB for free? Cool.

Removing the CPU from the mobo requires you to remove the heatsink. Now you'll have to apply thermal paste, which sets you back at least $20?

Now at $20 for 500 customers is already $10,000!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hadn't thought of that angle, even more glad I'm going to wait now.

That is one awesome bada*s frackin name! The dude's pretty badass too.
I wish I had a name that awesome. :(

Secondly, my point was that if you run the CPU with the heatsink on it, thermal paste (or trip) will mold because of the heat from the CPU. It's a good idea, for the longevity of your CPU, to apply re-apply thermal paste every time your CPU and heat sink lose contact, because you might develop air pockets and the contact between the surfaces will not be all that great and you'll lose out on cooling.

If you don't want to buy & apply thermal paste that is your call, if it were me I would.
But if it's a week to wait, I'd wait a week and get everything in one shot. Why would you bother with the extra work of removing your mobo?
