1181996 2011-02-28 03:24:00 Before my notebook died, I was looking at buying Oblivion off Trademe to play on it - so I was wondering:

- Is it realistic to expect it to run at a decent frame rate? (Specs here (www.playtech.co.nz)) I understand Oblivion is quite demanding at high-detail settings?

- Should I invest in a cooling stand if I plan to thrash it with gaming?

- What settings/resolution should I run it at?

1181997 2011-02-28 03:54:00 Personally i would not use a laptop for gaming.

My Compaq Presario C300 with its Intel Vid card with its own dedicated 256mb of ram is useless at playing Colin Mcrae Rally 2005 on Windows 7, but will Upscale dvds in PowerDVD 10 easily and without issue.

Laptops just aren't really built for gaming except the basic stuff.

I've read in PCWORLD mags that the best laptop to get for gaming is made by Alienware (i think thats the name. They were recently aqquired by Dell).

Edit: though the specs on that links are ok for average gaming i would think.

1181999 2011-02-28 04:41:00 I know someone who has basically the same thing except it's dell and has 8gb ram and a 430m (i think) instead of the 425.
The 430m runs crysis (even though it is quite old now) on high which I believe is higher spec than oblivion. Assuming the 425 is one down from the 430. You're good.
But laptop gaming can never really compete with desktops.

BTW if you're getting an i7 laptop don't expect long battery life :p

@ goodies: why are you running win 7 on a 256 stick. What version and is it the real deal :devil ?

1182000 2011-02-28 07:30:00 my laptop does oblivion at decent frames . Nothing spectacular, and it can be picky with resolutions and scaling if using external displays, but then it also does l4d2 at relatively low detail levels with good frames (or mid-high with shaky frames )
In winter I was also able to run 1368x768 and an external monitor of 1400x900 while playing runescape last year .

This year, not so sure since it's been very very hot . I'm running my tv with nothing on in the background, it's pretty much just above idle point . At 50 degrees C, and I have been able to see it hitting 73 degrees with high detail modes and antialiasing on runescape before I pulled it back . (although ironically at lowest detail sets and lowest resolutions I still pulled mid 60's)

So yeah cooling pad might be an idea .

As for other games, it handles raiden fighters 3, age of empires 2, 3, osmos, portal, and a few other games quite nicely .

The picture also becomes quite spectacular when hooked up to my TV for dvd's and the like .

Don't worry - I didn't buy it to run on battery - notebooks like this one don't have batteries; they have inbuilt UPS's!

Can anyone recommend a laptop cooler?

1182002 2011-02-28 07:44:00 Not too sure on that one. Being a slightly larger than normal laptop at 16.4", You might have to look at one of the higher end coolers.

Maybe wait until you've tried the laptop with some heavy use and temperature monitors on before you jump into cooling.

Can you recommend a good temperature monitor and stress tool?

Seeing as Sony have DOA'd it, I'm going to spank it's replacement like a naughty schoolgirl and see if I can't break it (within reason of course) . . . . I've already lost 2 nights worth of uninstalling crapware/installing apps and data, so I really want to prove the new one before I go through that again!!

Read it carefully. I said it had 256mb of dedicated Video RAM. and it runs on 1GB of system RAM(2x 512MB). The video card has its own ram that doesn't use up System ram.
