1181531 2011-02-25 23:18:00 I know this sounds crazy, but I want to try to see if I can get internet on my old Compaq Contura 410 laptop running WFW3.11 and has a 486DX with 8mb of memory. bot (15449)
1181532 2011-02-25 23:32:00 According to some sites, it doesnt have anything to connect to the net. One site says you need this (www.trumpet.com.au) but its not free. And you'll probably need an old version of some browser, for it to go anywhere Speedy Gonzales (78)
1181533 2011-02-25 23:35:00 It is crazy. What protection are you going to get? There isn't any. So if you do connect, it will just fill up with malware. pctek (84)
1181534 2011-02-25 23:35:00 That laptop would run Win95 - upgrade it and it'll be much easier :) jwil1 (65)

That doesn't make sense to me - if anything it'll stay clean(ish) as the malware is out to catch the likes of Windows XP and Windows 7. ;)

1181536 2011-02-26 00:44:00 I'd tend to agree with pcuser42 because viruses (virii?) exploit security holes, and XP and 3.1 work vastly differently (3.1 is 16-bit, XP is 32-bit) and will have very different security holes as they've got very different kernels. Not only that but how many people do you know that still use 3.1? Crackers go for the popular stuff, so they won't be wasting their time finding holes in a 20-year-old OS. The worst you'll pick up is Michelangelo or Stoned if they're still circling around the internet (which I'd imagine is very unlikely.) Even then, I don't think Flash Player exists for 3.1 so you may have issues with casual web surfing. mookster1 (15854)
1181537 2011-02-26 01:19:00 I just want to see if it can go on to google homepage - kind of an experiment. bot (15449)
1181538 2011-02-26 01:22:00 I know this sounds crazy, but I want to try to see if I can get internet on my old Compaq Contura 410 laptop running WFW3 . 11 and has a 486DX with 8mb of memory .

I think it might be workable but v slow . The RAM is not enough, a typical webpage these days takes up 32MB doesn't it? For you, it might go into virtual memory .

I have tried it on a Windows 95 system with just 32MB RAM and I was able to open Firefox which supported the current webpages (this was like 2yr ago) . IE doesn't support newish versions with Win95 .

The challenge might be that you need software for your network card so it runs TCP/IP I think . Wireless won't be supported (that I know of) .

1181539 2011-02-26 01:22:00 I was having a chat with the science teacher who is interested in computers. He said that it could possibly connect to the internet. I got inspired by a vid I saw on youtube where someone loaded google on a 20 year old pc. bot (15449)

Trumpet has 30 day trial period :)
Browser. Should be in archives. Get the good old Netscape
I think IE started in Windows 95/98 days.
