2011-02-25 23:14:00 | Just had a quick call from Daughter in OZ. She is now on-line at the Uni and noticed that MSE was slow to start a few times, (indicated off but did come on after a short while) but now it stays resolutely off. Firewall is still on. A web search found nothing helpful but there was one very old note that being behind a proxy server might be a problem. I suppose it is possible that the Uni system is using a proxy server for security reasons, but that aside, I've advised her to do a manual update and see if that fixes it, otherwise she'll have to see the IT guy. Any ideas on possible cause? It was fully up to date and working when it left here, but I have niggling memory that I might have noticed a slow start once or twice, but I'm not 100% sure, and it could have been something entirely different. | 1181480 | 2011-02-25 23:33:00 | Has she got the latest Version - 2 installed ? If she runs the manual update, that will detect and offer the newer version if she doesn't already have it. Seen that problem several times when it was version 1, usually to fix it, I would un-install it, then reinstall the program after doing a reboot, that usually would fix it. If it were being blocked by a proxy, that should only affect the updating, nothing to do with the actual startup. Another problem, may be that the laptop has an infection - some sort of Malware. While MSSE is a good free AV, its still not the best, and there have been several times I have had to install Nod32 after removing MSSE, clean out the PC of some infections, then reinstall MSSE.

2011-02-26 00:10:00 | I've seen MSSE get reluctant to start if there is any trace of another antivirus program on the HD, she hasn't installed anything else in that line, has she? | feersumendjinn (64) | |
2011-02-26 02:02:00 | I did all the install work, so there is no other AV installed, MSE was the latest version I had on disk (December PCW DvD) and I'm pretty sure I updated it on line straight after installing. I have already advised her to do a manual update. I've looked for Microsoft Services in their help files but as ever, it is nowhere to be found. There is the Control panel security centre, which brings up an MSE status window, but that is no real help. A more detailed explanation of where to look would be appreciated as further searches failed to find any information on MSE. Would uninstalling the program then downloading and installing it again be a good option? I'm not 100% sure she could handle that, but the IT chappie could I'm sure, but he is only part time I think. It has been scanned with MWB and Spybot S&D, CrapCleaner has been run as well I think. Cheers Billy 8-{)

If its on take no action change it to restart the service, on the 1st and 2nd failure. Then reboot. Then see if it works. And check if its on automatic. If it isnt change it to auto then click on start | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||
2011-02-27 00:49:00 | OK I've sent full instructions for checking via services.msc, plus how to uninstall MSE and downloading/installing and updating a new installation. We'll see what happens next. Quick question for me though, if you set the third option to 'restart' as well as one and two, then if that restart fails too, won't that put MSE into an endless loop of restarts or does it just give up if the third attempt fails? Looks like a perpetual motion machine or tail chasing exercise the way I read it, and everytime you booted, it would do the same thing. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2011-02-27 00:54:00 | No harm in changing the 3rd one to restart as well. I could check it from here, if you / she wants | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2011-02-27 22:08:00 | Hey Billy, maybe you should look into using Teamviewer for remote IT support for your daughter. Its super easy to use, free for personal use and takes the guesswork out of what is happening at the other end. My sister was trying to install MSSE on the weekend but was having problems so gave me a text. I got her to download the teamviewer software and connected up to see that the problem she was describing was totally different to what was actually happening. Saved a whole lot of tooing and froing. Just my 2 cents. B.
