1181579 2011-02-26 00:27:00 Finally in a position of looking at some upgrades. At this point:

Antec 300 case
Sandy bridge 2500K processor
Mb probably Gigabyte P67A - UD3 (or maybe Asus PpP67)
RAM G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 PC12800/1600MHz CL8 2x2GB
Win 7 home premium (I'm dithering of 32 or 67 bit)

ATI HD6850 video card, either:

www.playtech.co.nz

I'd appreciate any feed back on the choices, particularly Win 32 vs 64 and the choice of video card.

By the way, I will be using the system mostly for light/mod gaming - I don't play more than a few times a week but I like the games to look good and run well. Other than that nothing too demanding is anticipated to be done on it.

Cheers!

1181580 2011-02-26 00:33:00 If you want more than 4 GB you'll need 64 bit. If you get 64 bit, make sure whatever you get / or currently have supports 64 bit drivers. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1181581 2011-02-26 01:06:00 I love replaying my 'old' games so perhaps I'll stick with 32 bit in the meantime. Hey, it's one way of avoiding being tempted to spend money on more RAM! Richardd150 (13927)
1181582 2011-02-26 01:07:00 You can install 32 bit programs but you cant use 32 bit drivers in x64. Altho that depends on how old it is Speedy Gonzales (78)
1181583 2011-02-26 05:40:00 So, rule of thumb, 32 bit drivers for hardware won't work but programs probably will? Richardd150 (13927)
1181584 2011-02-26 05:42:00 Yup. But some programs also install shell extensions. If you're using 64 bit, install the 64 bit version of the program (if its available). Installing 32 bit programs (that install 32 bit shell extension files), can crash in my computer / computer in 64 bit Speedy Gonzales (78)

So do I. I have 64bit. Haven't found a game that doesn't work yet. Even the really, really old - I had to download a new version of DOSBox for those, but all good with the new one.

Good hardware, ASUS or the Gigabyte card - both excellent brands, so you might as well pick the cheaper of the two, bioth have 3 yr warranty.

Thanks Guy's:) I've figured out that the only hardware I was thinking of reusing that I can't recycle from my old system are the optical drives (I have two, I don't know why I have two as I have never used more then one at at time!) as I can't find the 64bit drivers for them.

I like the look of both cards and they're the same price - I was having trouble interpreting some of the features stated and deciding which one to settle on. I think I'll go for the ASUS.

1181587 2011-02-27 00:26:00 Don't forget a decent PSU. A otherwise good system is nothing with a crap PSU. Agent_24 (57)

Optical drives don't need drivers under Win 7 64.
